Yeah I didn't think it would work that way either. I've got the manual right here and was actually looking at it after he posted the idea.
Perhaps he thought the amp has an effects loop and the post preamp signal would be clean and then go from the effects out into a boost or overdrive pedal, then back into the effects return ?
Yeah, I was getting that from a review at PremierGuitar.com:
You can run both DIs at the same time—one clean and one dirty. You don’t have to have a splitter to lay down one clean take while you are using the amp to saturate tone. Whether you’d like to blend the signal or need to fix something later on the clean track, the option is there. Pretty killer.
I couldn't even make out from the photo in the review that the 2nd DI is a (labeled) line out. I shoulda just looked at Ampeg's block diagram; you see now why TB advice is offered at no charge.
You *could* run the line out into line-level FX. Something like the Helix LT would probably be cheaper than a second PF50T rig, easier to set up, and consistent from venue to venue. But whether it would sound satisfyingly comparable is up for grabs, even if you'd have it running a custom IR of your Ampeg rig.
