Two Notes Torpedo Captor

Hi guys,

Wanted to ask about this and something in particular i have in mind.

Do you think i'll be able to use it with an Orange Terror Bass 500 via the 8ohms version.

This impedance will bring it down to 250watts.

My main concern is the unit can only handle 100watts max. However, will it work if I use it at a lower volume and not crank the master?

The Orange is a hybrid amp, with tubes in the pre and a class D solid state power section.

My main use would be for silent headphone practice and silent direct recording.

any help of advice would be great!

Thanks, I did read this, it was helpful.

Do you think it is possible then, with the amp at low volume? Would the X be a better option as it has the light indicator for a signal that is too hot and also has the dedicated headphone out?

Hi @green3101, Thanks for getting back to me. Yes it should work at low volumes but we advise maximum caution on setting up your input level - start at 0 and slowly work your way up. The Captor X would be the best solution looking at your needs but please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with!

Hi Ross mate, just a couple of questions on this. I agree the Captor X could be more suited to my needs. just a few questions:

I’ll of course use it as you mention, with extra care. Would you say as long as the vent light indicator does not go into red, I’ll be safe to use?

in the event the X doesn’t work with the terror bass, will it harm the amp as well as the X, or is it only the X at risk due to wattage overload?

The article you kindly linked me to mentions that you guys have used 500watt bass heads with the Captor before multiple times, so I assume in this instance I should be on the safer side, considering the terror bass is 250watts at 8ohms.

I know the Captor X is mainly advertised for use with full tube amps, but will it work ok in my instance as the Orange Terror is a hybrid with a solid state power section

I note the speaker in on the Captor X is TS 1/4. However the Orange Terror only supports Speakon cable out. Would using a hybrid cable like this work? Invalid Link Removed

My main aim is to use the amp for silent headphone practice, to play along with songs from Apple Music or YouTube etc. What would you recommend I use in conjunction with Captor X, as I notice it does not have an aux input?

You don't need a speaker connected to that amp. Just unplug the speaker, and run the di into whatever you want. It's a solid state amplifier.

I used the standard torpedo for my v4b. I had the 8 ohm version.

A v4b is a tube amp. That one needs a load attached to it.

Your orange amp is not a tube amp. It does not require a load to run. Also, it will run and sound exactly the same without a speaker or load box.

But, I have one of these

Is pretty awesome. It's a cabsim, with extras. And it also connects to your phone through Bluetooth for practicing. You can also pump 800w into it. But, I wouldn't ever try that.

I was thinking of using that exact device!! If I was to take the DI out of the Orange as you suggest, could I run directly into the element? What cable would you use?

same question but for the Ampeg. As you mention, that would require a load box such as the Captor or the Captor X. What output would you take from either of these into the Element?

With the element, you just run a standard TS instrument cable from your fx send/preamp out. Just like any other pedal. But, it claims to accept up to 800w of power. I wouldn't trust that though. That's a lot of power for such a small little guy. It doesn't sound safe to me. But, It works great just using it in a pedal chain.

If you were using the torpedo, I'd run its di into the pedal using an xlr to 1/4" TS cable. XLR female into the torpedoes di, 1/4" TS into the input of the pedal.

Yup. It'd be the same thing. Just, use an unbalanced cable. Mono. XLR to TS. Not TRS.

I just figure you already have a standard instrument cable. The pre out is the same signal as the DI out.
