I do not own one single active bass. Just too much control and too artificial sounding for my own taste.
If you ever have a chance, try out a bass that has passive pickups and an Aguilar OBP-3. I said the same thing about actives till I put an OBP-3 in a passive bass that I wasn't digging so much, and the OBP-3 sounded very organic and when flat the pickups passive tone still shone through. I just used it to cut all the 'mwah' out of my fretless since I don't really like that sound, but love the feel of a fretless. It may not be for you, but its the closest thing to a passive bass tone with active controls that I have found
Not tryin to force anythin down your throat, just sayin if you ever find you have to have an active preamp, thats what worked for me who also thought preamps always sounded too digital, artificial, and crisp.
