Sorry for redirecting the conversation a bit, but can someone please give me the low down on the Dyna 5 string. I realize they have changed over the years and specifics would help, but I'm just looking for a general review. I have a 4 string Dyna with super ferrites and it plays like a dream, even better than my Xotics. I'm thinking about purchasing a 5 string Dyna! If there is a good chance it will play a sound like my 4 string it may be worth paying the outrageous shipping cost ($180) to get it here. Thanks in advance!!

The first generation Dyna 5 has Super Ferrite pickups. The second generation has humbuckers, is active/passive, has dip switches on the preamp that can change the mid frequency and sounds a lot like a Palaedium. I owned a second gen and liked it. I only played one first generation Dyna 5 but it was poorly set up and needed strings. I didn’t care for it but have always wanted to try one set up properly and with fresh strings.

GC has a second generation 4 but I have not seen a 5 recently. They are rare. Good luck!

Hardware is nearly perfect, was refinished professionally but has a ding from an overtightened string under the bridge. It was my first Peavey and was my favorite for a long time, if the value is under $200 I'd rather just keep it.

Thanks, most are already gone at this point. GBass and T-40 are lifers, trying to decide on a Epiphone Ripper, a Westone and the Fury.

They stopped using the P type knobs when the split-P pickup launched.

I have loved my Peavey DynaBass Five so much that I never needed to shop for another five string bass, it has the tone and playability that is perfect for me both live and in the studio. With Super Ferrites and the Dyna Bass circuit the bass naturally has that perfect sound that I think of as the "Super Jazz" sound everyone else is trying to recreate. I usually run my bass in bypass mode, switching on the active 'flat' for slap or a boost and I use an external tone control for a more vintage tone. The spacing feels just a bit tighter than most current five string basses but you do get used to it, and even though the string length is 34" the B String is Thunderous and intonates properly. I have always used a GHS Bassics Lite set 40-58-80-102 and add a 120.

I have a '91 Dyna 5. Pretty sure this is near the end of the run for SF equipped Dyna 5s. I got it because I love my Dyna 4 and Foundations, but ultimately, I'm a 5 string guy, so curiosity had me rabidly searching for one to try. I found this one on ebay as a project bass for super cheap--like $200 shipped. The body was refinished (nicely, though) and the preamp needed all of the pots removed, cleaned and reassembled to work properly. That alone was lucky, try to find replacements for these... yikes! After a couple years, the neck went from a little wonky, but functional, to too wonky for reasonable use. I did just get the neck back from warped neck.com and now the bass is as good as it can be! It set up nicely and now I can experience 100% of what the bass is all about.

Does it play like the 4s? Sort of, yes. All of the usual familiar things are there-Super Ferrites, knobs and controls are the same, that great Peavey build quality, etc...
This one has the flatter radius like the 2nd Gen Dyna (12"?). The other main difference is the elephant in the room: neck profile. What they did on this version was take the 1.75" wide nut neck (as found on the T40/45/Fury/Patriot/etc... and squish 5 strings on it. The neck does feel and measure out nearly the same as my 1.75"ers. Because of this, the string spacing is rather narrow (about 16mm) by today's standards (which are usually closer to 17.5-19mm. It took me a little bit to get used to that narrow spacing. The sound is pure SF. Love it!
Other than getting used to the spacing, the other thing is the magnetic field of the SFs. I tried to get the maximum spacing at the bridge, but ran into an issue with the G string on the bridge pickup. It was just too close to the edge and the output dropped off. SFs were obviously not designed for 5 string basses, so it's clear why they changed that up as the 5 string took off.

There is at least $300 worth of parts on it, so I wouldn't sell it for less than that.

Here is a photo of my well travelled DynaFive. I went on tour shortly after keeping this bass. It was an evaluation instrument sent to some dealers from the factory that I returned a check instead of the instrument, much to the chagrin of certain parties. Even after several years of touring in North and South America, Europe and Japan the bass was spotless until one day my wife decided to knock several of my basses of their stands in my office. Both of my Peavey basses got battle scarred that day but luckily none of the others. On that one day I understood what Chris Rock was saying.

I know from my experience on non-musical instrument Ebay auctions if you at least ask the seller if they will do a BIN and you add say 15% to the price to show both good faith and that they may come out ahead than if it was just a one bid auction, they might consider it. You never know til you ask. They may want to free up some capital for their next investment.

Agree....$350 would be a fair price IMHO
