So I’ve been spending time with my “new” Foundation, doing A/B comparisons with my other favorite basses to get a feel for how the Foundation compares and contrasts with them. I’m liking the power of the Super Ferrites, their midrange presence, and their aggressiveness. The brand new DR Black Beauties help a lot too…

So question: if I wanted to use a pair of these Super Ferrites in a five-string build, what is the maximum string spacing they will do? I like narrow-spaced fives; my preference is 17mm, but I can work with a bit narrower if necessary. Did Peavey use the same pickups on their fives and their fours?

Yes.

The 1st generation 5 string Dyna Bass , Foundation and TL-5 models all had the standard 4 string pickup.

The Ferrite is a blade pickup so you've a bit more leeway regards string spacing. You'll get away with 68mm spacing.

Thinking about getting this Candy Apple Red Dyna bass,in next few days,if seller and I can agree on getting it shipped. Still negotiating shipping,and final agreement. Don't look bad in pictures,missing the truss rod cover on the neck,and missing a knob which says he has it,but one of the pot shafts and pot might need replaced. Has the super ferrites also,comes with not original case.

Truss rod covers belong in the trash.

They look good covering the mess that 80's USA Peavey basses have under them.
The wheel at the heel is where it's at.
The Milestone basses or whatever other models Peavey had with them are the way to go.
One of the great things about Music Man basses.

They are just such a nuisance. I can't adjust my truss rod on the fly. I keep all my covers in a parts drawer.

My necks don't move much seasonally.

Any neck that requires truss rod adjustment “on the fly” is a poorly made neck.

I live in South Texas where it is generally humid, however, in Winter it can be very dry here. All my basses have stable necks so it is no problem to have the truss rod covers installed.

If I see a used bass with the truss rod cover missing I suspect it has a neck that is not stable. That may not be true but long ago I had a Carvin 6 that had an unstable neck. It changed all the time and Carvin eventually replaced that bass. A friend had a Tobias that was also unstable. I think he just lived with it but I would have sent it back right away.

I was mucking about with my 1995 USA Peavey Fury the other day, after too much neglect. I have some fairly nice basses. Custom shop EBMM, older Spector Euros, Various USA and import instruments. The neck and playability of this Peavey equals or exceeds them all, and I've never had to level the frets at all. Crazy considering, I scored it for $60.

I still want a matching Foundation with SF's to round out the dynamic duo.

Black with maple is always a great combo...love the knobs on her too! You def. should find a matching Foundation...I can't say enough good things about mine.
