Picked up a Peavey hardcase today for $40. Looks like somebody tried to customize the inside to fit a bass with longer upper horn. Cut it up a bit, but should still do the job.

Just hard plastic on the bottom. What is the inside supposed to be? I assume some soft material, but can you give me some idea of what?

I remember gray foam that would deteriorate over time and stick to the bass. I've picked up foam and velvet type material at an upholstry shop and made pads. Use a spray adhesive that's made for car upholstery.

Most of them were just the plastic with a strip of foam glued to the top. Some of them were lined with a soft fabric. I think Tim said that the painted T-40s had the lining. Great cases - they are almost indestructable.

This thing is 25 years old and, if somebody hadn't taken a carving tool to the inside, it would qualify as indestructible. May post pix in a bit (new camera to play with.)

Is your case the contour case from Indy. CL ? I was looking it that, I'm looking for the rectangle case with Peavey moulded in for a Foundation.

Yup. Picked it up this afternoon. I have no idea what bass it was originally created for, but here's my Foundation in it.

Here's a look at the butchered up part.

Figure I can rig something, glue it in and then cover the body cavity as described in an earlier post.

It's a failry common mod.

IF a customer sends me one, I use closed foam from a backpacker's store.. it's about the right thickness and won't degrade.

contrours are about as indestructable as it gets... I've thrown them out of 3rd floor windows and had zero issues with the foundation inside (I know bored road band).

I've shipped without a box at least 200x and never had an issue.

Lined were sold as an upgrade to folks with a painted or gloss bass... they were not cheap when an option (I think $135?).. the standard was like $50

Wow, Tim...how bored do you get on the road before the idea of tossing a bass and case out the window sounds like a good one?

Never traveled with a band, but hard to imagine that level of boredom.

Thanks for the tip on the closed foam idea. Confirms a direction I was heading.

I'm glad you got it ! I didn't really need another contour case but, for that price I would have bought it. I'm installing a liner in one of mine I'll post pics when its done.

I figured the price was fair. The woman said she'd had it for 25 years. Just bought a new case and a Rogue bass, then upgraded to a Fender P-bass with case. Had the Rogue and case for sale as well--umm, no, thank you. I'll just take the Peavey case.

It's dirty and the hinges have a little bit of rust (I prefer to call it patina,) but that's a small matter to deal with.

+1 on those cases being awesome, I have 2 right now, one fit to my Patriot, not sure what the other one was made for (it is fabric lined) but it fits 2 of my other basses. I love how tight they hold the bass, and how BEEFY they are.

Case Notes...

1-There were multiple versions.. the biggest difference is the headstock... later basses required one that has a indented head stock heel.... .not all basses will fit in all contours.

2-Uppper Horn.... there were multiple versions of the upper horn... some basses (Foundation 2000) had extended horns.... this is where folks hacked up their cases...

3-Prop Rod... .. if your case has it installed (and is the unlined variety) take off the prop rod and put it away... through the years I've seen 20+ that had one side pull up and scrape the body.

4-Other Basses... The controur will fit other basses... I keep my schack (European botique fretless) in a lined..

5-Shipping... When I was on the road, I'd ship gear ahead.. for these, I'd tape the handle shut.. then tape the hinges and latches... ... shipping companies like that there are no hard edges or things protruding.. the baggage carriers enjoy there's a good solid handle. .... when doing this, remember that you have to use clear tape - no duct tape (shipping rules)

I was always kind of bummed they didn't have an Amp version like the T-15

Does anyone know if there are any cases like this currently being made... Montgomery Wards Used to sell an injection molded case for acoustics (yes have one)

Other basses will also fit in this case.

Opinion --- you shouldn't sell it... few others will take abuse like this one.

Enough case talk, time for a photo. Bought nos a few years ago, an '85 Patriot.

I have a 1986 Foundation "S" that I bought new. It came with the contour case, unlined. My bass is kind of pearl white with the matching headstock. A friend at the time had a Foundation and her case had lining in it. As I remember it was a medium to dark brown material and it covered the area where the body was on the backside and where the headstock came past the compartment.

The foam in mine has completely broken down over the years. In fact the foam strip that covered the neck on the top of the case is completely gone and, as said before, the foam under the body has broken down as well. If I didn't have it covered with an old shirt, it would be stuck all over the bass.

I'm going to have to look back over this thread and find how someone lined their case. Other than the foam stuff, these cases are indestructable.

By the way, can I get a number, please.

I use hiker's cushions.. it's a closed cell foam.. will not decay like the OEM foam did.

Like noted, remove the prop rod.
