Some builders use a cheaper piece of wood (poplar, for example) that was dyed really dark to simulate exotic wood veneer. Not sure what Peavey used

Here's some pics of the roughest cirrus of the bunch. It's in solid shape but definitely well played for sure and has a bit of wear. The hardware was toast. Two tuners were beyond repair so I decided to upgrade everything with new hipshot parts!

Sadly the bridge pickup is only half functional and gives me a lot of single coil hum and reduced output. I have a fresh set of pickups coming direct from Peavey though and she should be good as new! This one plays really well. Excited to do the Cirrus showcase.
Though this last pic isn't a USA, it has the VFL pickups and is a "Baby's first Cirrus" type of thing. Got this for a steal! The top... looks like throw up. Totally fake, not a real quilt.... but it sounds nice!

Can I join the club? This is my USA Dyna with a gold knob swap to match the rest of the hardware. I got it for a steal here on talkbass pre-pandemic.

and you're lucky to have a 5. Im keeping my eye out for a deal for one. I have an Ibanez 5 that I'm not bonding with. Also, there is a thread on these forums about a dude remaking super ferrites with positive feedback from customers so far. You could always look at those as an option. I was thinking about it for the Ibby.

I'll go on a limb and say a late dyna can be made to sound in the cirrius/millenium realm --
I had a 5 for a while. It sounded to me like a Palaedium in passive mode. It had that wonderful growl. All the fancy onboard electronics did nothing for me but some guys love it.
That is my favorite color for the bass....black with black hardware. I already have way too many basses or I would have bought it.
I had several Millennium basses and failed to really bond with any of them. They sounded good but not great to me. The Cirrus basses and the GV were the ones that really worked for me.

@Giffro 's 91 Dyna 5 must be the earliest production of the 2nd Gen Dyna. My Dyna 5 is also from '91, but has the SFs and typical 80s era Dyna features, and therefore the latest production of the 1st Gen. It does have a flatter radius fingerboard (12") than stated in the manual for the SF Dyna 5 (8"), perhaps Peavey was transitioning into the next generation specs..?
Mine was a $150 bargain, but was a basket case that took a lot to get it back up and running. It is originally metallic grey, but received a cool and well done green burst on the body. I had to rebuild all of the pots, replace the switch, get two replacement tuners, find a rear control plate, used the knobs from my Dyna 4 (which got cool black metal knobs) and the neck had to take a trip to Warpedneck.com and get two treatments to get back to straight and true. I spent about 3 hours time and about $225 extra on it. I like the bass, but I would like the 2nd Gen Dyna better as it addressed some of the issues that plagued early 5 string basses. It has wider string spacing, pickups that work properly for 5 string spacing and tweaked the neck and electronics for 5.
Oh, the black Dyna 4 has since ditched the green strings tuned BEAD and now has regular strings tuned EADG and sports a Hipshot Xtender on the low E.

"Welcome @Giffro ! Great bass you have. Your Dyna 5 is a second model and has flat top humbuckers, not Super Ferrites. They were used for a short time since the passive and active VFLs were in development and replaced them. 1st model had Super Ferrites."

Random question my friends. Can a T-40 be wired like a G&L L2000 in passive mode with a pickup selector switch, series/parallel/OMG switch (I'm not sure if there should be inner coil/outer coil switching), but with two volumes and a passive treble control and bass control (4 knobs)? I'm trying to figure out how I want to wire up my old '78 T40 parts (I have two SF humbuckers, 4 old Peavey knobs, and the two holes for switches) and I know I don't want to wire it up spin-a-split style. Thoughts/ideas? Thanks!
If you put a three position switch on each pup you'd have great flexibility. You could choose inner, outer, both bridge or neck side coils, HH, HS, SH, ect. (Is this spin-a-split? I don't know the term.)
I personally would wire it with stereo output and V/T for each pup. But if I were going to wire mono, I'd go the route you'd mentioned: V/V/Bass/Treb.
It's the term folk use for T-40/T-40 single coil-humbucker swap.
I don't think it's technically correct, others with more know how will correct me. Standard coil split basically disconnects one coil, Peavey method shunts one coil to ground. Then there's series/parallel for each pickup, with just 3 wires how would folk achieve that ?
Thank you! Spin-a-split is the odd but interesting stock T40 wiring where the tone controls can be slightly turned to enable single coils rather than full on humbucking. I still can't wrap my head around it.

Spin-a-split by itself is just a continuously variable shunt to ground one coil of the pickup. In a switched setup, the coil is either fully active or fully inactive; with spin-a-split, it can be anywhere in between.
The T40 pickup that I have is three-wire; I don't think parallel is possible with this kind of three-wire setup. So the choices for a single pickup are series, inner coil, or outer coil.
