This is my only Peavey, my 87 Patriot. Plays nicely, but needs a fret level. Got it from a friend about a decade ago, pickup ring and truss rod cover lost to time. The pots stopped working last year, so I had a friend replace them with new ones, he replicated the weird wiring, kept the original tone cap and the resistor between the pots.
Nice color. With the painted headstock, black hardware and rosewood fretboard it has all the bells and whistles.
It may have never had a pickup trim ring, I believe Peavey put them on for a time and didn't for a time.
Truss rod cover is pretty easy to make.

Thank you. I'm certain this one had a pickup ring, it has the holes in the pickguard for it.
Sweet Patriot but weird wiring ?
Patriots had nothing weird , strange nor unusual with regard to wiring; truth be told the Patriot use pretty much the same set up as Fender did with the Precision in 1951.
There's the pickup, single coil/ 2 wires (hot & ground). Pots are 250k Log, then there's the cap, 0.022uF as opposed to the more common 0.047uF.
Only other thing is the treble bleed, 0.001Uf cap and a resistor. Fender started adding the treble bleed in the mid 60's so by the time Patriots showed up it'd been in use almost 20 years.
Nor did I but a trip to the local library provided the answer.
Have to say I find the idea of adding a treble bleed cap to a single pickup instrument pointless. On a jazz bass, folks blend neck/bridge pickups so retaining some treble has merit. Vol pot on a P-bass is basically an on/off knob.
Hey all...update on the TL-Five with the swapped out preamp to a Tone Monster. I bought the SEB3-BMT model from Guitar Fuel. There were quite a few wires coming from the TL pickups (the 'hot' wire and several that were attached to the ground terminals) so I had to do some soldering/shrink tubing etc but I got everything into a nice group to attach to the solderless terminals. I also had to use the original TL output jack as the one that comes with the preamp is way to shallow and I would have had to have drilled out part of the cavity to make it fit. No bueno! Got it all buttoned up, cranked it up and all sounded fine. The preamp is plenty hot (you can adjust) and is pretty clean on hum unless you just dime the treble, then you here some noise. I will never run it past 'flat' so no issues for me. On to sound.
Bass control - I like where this control sits. Keep it flat and you have a good starting point. If you want to add some depth....crack it open a little and it makes things go boom.
Mid control - The original passive/active switch is gone and now a frequency selector is in its place. 250/500/850 are the points. In my short time playing around with the pre I have been leaving it in the center (500) spot and leaving the knob flat. A good solid mid tone. I also like flipping to the 250 setting and giving the mid knob a little boost. Helps give some low mid thump without getting muddy. I like it.
Treble control - The treble control to my ear sits at a lower frequency than the stock pre. I think that makes it a little more usable if you like to boost treble a little but I will never run this past flat and might even back it off some. I do feel like this weakens the slap sound a bit as you don't have as 'glassy' of highs as the stock preamp. I'm not a slapper though when gigging etc so I'm fine with this.
P/U balance - This knob seems like it is a bit jumpy. In the middle you get the classic 50/50 split between pickups. Once you roll to the bridge though there is a noticeable change in tone favoring the bridge. What is really strange (at least to me) is if you roll all the way back to the bridge it gets very thin sounding....I mean super thin...so much so that it would be a totally unusable setting for me. I haven't really tried rolling up toward the neck p/u but I'm sure it does the same thing going that direction. I'm pretty much a 50/50 guy though so all is good with me.
All in all I'm really pleased with this preamp. For roughly $90 shipped it seems like a solid unit.

Not necessarily new or better, but I think that Pickguard Planet / Chandler did a GREAT job with the replacement pickguard for my '88 Fury. One thing about doing business with them: once my order was in, well, the order was in. They didn't bombard me with various status update messages or enclose a small bag of candy with the shipment. But the product was exactly to specification.

Seconds on Chandler. I have two from them and both were spot on. Not the cheapest by far, but you get what you pay for. When I got one for my Fury, they were able to get me what I needed from pix on the website, butr when I got one for my Squier '51 Tele, I had to send the old guard to them. Each took about 3 weeks to get, maybe a little longer. They are good about replying to e-mail inquiries.
There's an eBay seller over here does Peavey PGs.
He used the PGs off my basses to make up the templates; 1st, 2nd or 3rd gen, Brian has them.
Exchange rates have swung back in your favour, basic w/b/w will cost maybe $60 inc shipping. For fancy stuff like mirror finish it's $70 with shipping. From ordering to delivery in the US, whole thing takes 10 to 14 days; Brian and his boy aim for a 3 day turnaround by working 7 day weeks.

Brian made a B/W/B Gen 2 Fury guard and a Tort Gen 1 Fury guard for me and it was easier than Pickguard Planet.There's an eBay seller over here does Peavey PGs.
