U.S. Peavey Club

Got the magnets out after machining out the epoxy on the drill press and some persuasion tools in a few different places at the same time. Now to get the coil out.

What I want to know is, where does the magic come from? .....my bet is on those wide azz magnets under there.
Why is it not as edgey as the Foundation and Patriot SF pickup?

It's a shame that Peavey felt the pressure to follow Fender like everybody else with a split P pickup (not that split P's aren't fantastic) in the Gen 2 and 3 Fury basses.
Gotta give them tons of credit for the Foundation, Patriot, and all the VFL and VFL Plus equipped basses.
So many companies just copycat with P basses, J Basses, and PJ bass.

These are a bit more difficult to save the covers as the bobbin is almost a perfect fit in the cover. I used a very small drill bit to cut out around the coil. Even being as careful as possible the cover gave way where the molding was a bit thinner. I can make a repair and save the cover. Will check gauss level and start talking measurements soon. This pickup has the blade sticking up from the bobbin about over 3/16 inch

The magic is probably from the higher turn count or different wire size ( have not got to the coil yet)

As for the magnets , the gauss regardless of size is not much different. But the field produced by the two larger magnets might / most likely have something to do with it.

This pickup is a re purpose. , magnets , bobbins , blades , wire.
That's what I thought.

Lowe had a huge stock of blades, bobbins and magnets bought in for the T-series, made business sense to use them in other pickups. When the T-series was discontinued, the pickup gubbins ended up in the Sarzo bass.

That explains the delicious tones I get from my passive modded Verdine White / Sarzo bass wired vvt.

Looking at a SF coil and the Slant bobbin. They are both #42awg , the Slant has more wire on the bobbin. So the Slant is just a hotter SF with bigger Magnets

What do the bigger magnets do?

Maybe why I also like the Dimarzio Model P pickup.

Correction , after further review the Slant is a smaller wire than the SF. It does seem to be #43.
As far as over/underwind , there seems to be windows of sound depending on multiple factors. It really depends on what one is looking for and equipment , playing style , type of guitar , etc.

The bigger Magnets create a larger field would be my guess but have no way to test or see the field being created

DiMarzio seems to like to use a steel/magnet style built p bass. I see a lot of their p offering is screws with ceramic mags. Not the fender magnet in coil. For frequency this makes more sense. Magnet in coil operate in a higher frequency while steel core with magnets operate in a lower frequency

So after looking at the original SF coil (not waxed) and this slant Coil ( dipped or coated on some kind of plastic like coating) I wanted to make sure the Slant wire is properly identified. After taking the Slant pickup apart and getting a piece of wire 20 inches long it was soldered to leads and got a read of 3.0 at .200 on my meter. Did the same with my current supply of #42 and #43. Current #42 is 2.9 and the #43 is 3.6.

After winding for years and feeling American magnet wire when I come across offshore wire , usually taking apart cheap pickups you can instantly feel the coarse feel of the low quality wire. The Peavey wire has that coarse offshore feel.

My guess now is that both pickups are #42 but the fury coil looks smaller because it's been dipped in some form of a plastic dip and the SF is not dipped or coated in anything. It's like a clear plastic. It's not lacquer or super hard , it's a firm rubber type material.

Is 6.8k range a agreeable ohm reading for everyone here? I'm wondering if there are variances in these coils. Is it possible to get a few readings from a few Pickups? Readings from the jack are fine
The reading at the jack should be done with the volume knob full up and the tone knob full up, correct?
I just put a 1/4" plug in the jack of my Slant Fury (without cable or screw cap just the plug) and got a reading from the hot and ground lug and it was 4.25K ohms.
I'm not sure if the way I did it will give an accurate reading. Volume and tone knobs full up.
My T40 toaster humbucker reads 5.67K ohms, I got that directly from the lead wires of one pickup on my desk.
I know a Dimarzio Model P comes in at 11.54K ohms
I think an EMG GZR P is 11.20K ohms

I do like those EMG Gzr pickups. Got to see him play from about 5 feet away in Montreal with Black Sabbath. I noticed he had EMGs in his bass.

Hopefully we can get a few more readings from other slants.

Yes, I hope so too.
I don't remember what the reading was on my Patriot Super Ferrite but I do remember being surprised at the low number.
I had previously guessed that most pickups were in the 10-11-12K ohms range.
I think the first pickup I ever checked was a used Model P Dimarzio.
