So I found a Peavey Fury at a pawn shop for $69. Has the P pickups in it. Painted neck and fretboard. Neck seems streight. USA model. Now I am not to big on the painted fret board. However I am thinking for $69 this would be a good deal. Has cosmetic flaws in, paint chipped and ect. If I decided to get this, how hard would it be to remove paint from the fretboard? Any one have any info on this bass. Never seen a painted fretboard before. Is this a good deal? Forgot to get the serial number off of it.

The painted fretboard models are relatively rare and you stole that one. Removing poly paint is a PITA and I wouldn't attempt it on a fretboard without de-fretting. I'd recommend playing it for a while to see what you think first. I don't feel that much difference between the paint and rosewood or ebony since my fingers really don't touch the fretboard. If you don't like the feel, sell it, you'll make some $$. Here's a pic of mine and there are a few other folks in this club that have them.

As mech said, that bass is relatively rare. If you don't like the painted fretboard, you can sell it for a $100 or so profit, buy another Fury that has a fretboard you like, and have money left over in your pocket.

Got it Monday: 1987 Peavey Patriot, with hardly a scratch on it. Estate sale. $165. Deluxe Schaller "elephant ear" tuners, gloss finish all over, and to my surprise, the neck is the same width as my '91 Dynabass and '92 Fury. I thought the Patriots had wider string spacing more like a P-bass. Maybe not all models were alike.

Anyway, great player and great looker.

That looks like a Patriot Custom. They had a Jazz width neck and were a couple of pounds lighter than the standard Patriots. The standard Patriots were mostly 1 3/4 inches wide at the nut like the older P basses, but there were some with narrower necks.

I thought the "custom"s had the grover titan tuners and painted headstock?

They could be Grover Titans. Without the maker stamp, they look alike to me. I call them elephant ears, to distinguish them from the clover leaf style.

The headstock and the rest of the neck has a natural high gloss finish.

Yeah those are Grover Titans aka the best heavy duty tuners ever, and Peavey put them on a ton of USA basses. This is my "custom" which is similar to yours, but with painted headstock black hardware and rosewood fretboard. Had no idea there was so much variation in the model that they can be similar in build, but so different looking.

Sadly I have not been able to find a string tree in black, that is the only original part missing from the bass.

Currently strung up with the lower 4 of a 5-string set tuned to C. Damn the fat single coil is a monster at lower tuning!

Looks like your string tree is brass. I've used this stuff with good results to turn brass black. Be sure there is no coating on the part and that it is polished and degreased for best results. Follow directions and do several coats, polishing with fine scotchbright pad in between.

I picked up a black USA Fury with the painted FB a few years ago on craigslist for $60 or $80 too. Great bass. It's been my #1 ever since. I honestly can't tell the difference between it and a non-painted fretboard.

I don't believe that's a factory fretless. The seller avoids mentioning the fretboard at all, which makes me not trust him.

That "fretless" Sarzo evidently was bought and returned for whatever reason. Not a non-paying bidder relist, but recieved and returned. Seller's feedback...

Thanks but I meant the string tree is completely different part installed by the previous owner, the original would be a triangle shaped piece that held only the two higher strings, like on Crewscontrol's bass. I've seen a few pop up on ebay but none black like what would have been on this bass.

What year is that bass? I'm not an expert on them, but I know I have an '87 Dyna with the triangle and a '91 Dyna with a bar like that one. I'm not sure when they changed from the triangle, but they did at some point, at least on Dynas.
