[DEL]I'm pretty sure it's over 9 lbs. I will try the bathroom scale and see if I can get an accurate weight[/DEL]. Weighed in at 9.9 lbs on the bathroom scale. I did get a wide strap, and that made a huge difference

The Ibanez is an active bass, and the noise level from it is non existent with Volume and EQ in any position.

The Peavey is almost completely silent if both V's are on 10, or if the Tone is set to 0. Any other combination of settings results in a hum. This is in my house, near a computer, TV, stereo, and various other electronics. The hum is not noticeable while I'm playing, only when I stop.

And don't misunderstand, I absolutely love the Peavey foundation. The sound is great, and the neck feels perfect.

So of course, I'm wondering if almost perfect can be perfect with some shielding. :hmm:

Does anyone here have a first generation TL-5? The one with Super Ferrites? I just got one, and want to double check the wiring... looks like it may have been modified at some point. I'm looking specifically for pics of the back of the preamp board, as well as the wires coming from the pickups. Thanks!!

First knob- volume. Just like it sounds.

Second knob- bass. Like you described, pushing the bass up will increase your overall output. This is not ideal as, at least in my experience, you get a woofy sound. This knob on my forum doesn't seem to need alot of cranking to get a tonal difference.

Third knob- treble. The treble should never be cranked all the way up, imo. On my forum, I use it just to add a little clarity, or back off to round out the tone slightly.

Keep in mind, Ive had this bass for like 3 days and am still trying to get a good read on it. Hope this helps a little.

And btw, really loving this Forum!

That helps, and makes me feel a little silly for assuming it worked more like a 2 band eq on, say, a Stingray. I guess I figured because of the other mods that this had been changed, too. At least I know it's not broken. I'm not real excited about how it works, but I love the tone that I get out of it.

That most certainly does! This is what I ended up with, even before seeing your pics. Someone had both black wires from both pickups, as well as a white wire from one, soldered together, but not grounded. They also had a random capacitor jumping between two solder points. It was weird, but seemed to work. Thank you brother!

I just have had it stuck in my head that the controls were v/t/b. It never occurred to me that there might be a different order. The volume boost was throwing me off also. Both are things I haven't encountered before. And, there was an Empire Strikes Back reference thrown in there. Not to say that it's a piece of junk, but that to me the bass and treble are in the wrong place. Like I've said before, I've just assumed that something wonky was going on in there because other modifications had been made. I got this bass before I knew anything about how such things worked, and that thought has just been solidified in my head for years. I never thought it might work the way it does by design.

What a weekend!

Got a '91 TL-5 in trade from a fellow TB'r. Pretty happy with it so far. One thing I didn't like was the stock knobs, one of which had been replaced with a J-bass knob, so I ordered a set of gold, press-on knobs. They came early, so I went to install them, quickly. Started with the blend knob, pushed a bit, but it didn't go on right away, which I've had happen before. Nothing a little extra pressure can't solve. Only this time, I pushed too hard, and, POP! The pot broke. The shaft was pushed in. I was super bummed.

I figured all was lost, so the next day I decided to yank the preamp and start looking for a replacement. Pulled the pre, and looked at the blend pot... essentially, all that happened was the bottom portion of the pot came off. I was able to put it back on, squeeze the tabs that hold it in place, and viola! It was back! Really dodged a bullet on that one!

Also, I read on TB that TL's with Super Ferrites were supposed to have 2 pickups of opposite polarity (one N and on S) so that when wired, one pickup uses the black wire as a lead and the other uses the red wire as the lead, it would become hum cancelling when the blend was in the middle. Mine had the red wires as the leads for both pickups. I did a quick polarity test with a compass and found that both pickups were the same polarity. Not a big deal, but I tend to be a little OCD about stupid stuff like this. I happen to also have an '87 Patriot that has a Super Ferrite, so I tested the polarity as well. It just so happened to be the opposite of the other 2 in the TL, so I swapped it with the neck pickup, and now, no hum at all when the blend is in the middle. Pretty cool.

Great looking bass! I don't mean to be rude, but this is the US-made Peavey club. There are a few US-made Grinds out there, but the one you have is an import BXP model. I think there is a Peavey BXP club that would be happy to count you among the ranks! :)

Glad it all worked out and a bit of good luck that you had the Patriot and the PU was opposite magnetic.
