I think some of the VFLs are passive like in the later foundations, but they are definitely active in the Forums. Does anyone know if the Sarzo pickups are the same dimensions as these earless VFLs?

I believe I saw a thread on here in the last year or so that illustrated that they are not.
Nice basses there.
I've seen those Forums in black and red also, and my fave color...
That's the first one I've seen in sonic blue. Nice. The Ax and 5 string versions also had sunburst and purple variations. I got mine home from rehearsal space today, and it seems like, looking at dimensions of pickups online, that routing or gaps are the only options. If anyone knows any different, let me know.

However, I have owned many different Peavey USA basses over the past 3+ decades and I've spent a lot of time reading and learning about Peavey basses on forums and directly form the Peavey Manual Archives.I continue to see reference to many inaccuracies in describing the type of pickups in Peavey basses and I finally decided to gently speak up.
Over the years, Peavey USA has used a wide range of pickup types and shell shapes and the different types of pickups span an equally broad ranging tonal palette.
I think it is important that we accurately identify the pickups in our basses so that we can equate the tone with the type of pickup. For example... a Foundation with Super Ferrite pickups sounds hugely different than a later Foundation with the frequency tailored single-coils in the "VFL shaped" shells.

Just a taste of what's to come.. Started working on my '87 Patriot.. Was originally red/black 'guard, maple neck.. The only reason I took the 80 grit to it, was the finish was barely a MM thick and I knew I could get away with sanding it. It's mostly down to bare wood except for inside the horn area.. I have to sand out some bangs/chips to even out the body, and I'm also sanding it to give it a more curvy ibanez/warwick-style contoured shape.
I'm refinishing it for my boy when he's old enough to play. It's going atomic yellow with black pickguard, I'm going to Scotchbrite the gloss off the neck completely and take the Dremmel to the hardware to clean it up a bit.

Anyways, I'm going to start a new thread on in eventually when I have more time. Surprisingly, it's a 3-piece body, with the center piece being very symmetrical to the neck pocket and is slightly darker than the outer wings. I'd be sick as a two-tone stain light/dark, but there's a few cracks in the body wood, so it's going a solid colour.
I'll get some more/better pictures this weekend!

There are certainly many, many more Peavey pickups that can be listed.
I've owned many different models, and multiples of a bunch of them so I've had a chance to enjoy many of the available tones. Here's the ones that I can easily recall; T-40 (toaster and blade), T-45, Patriot, Gen 1 Foundation, Gen 2 Foundation 4 & 5, Foundation 2000, Gen 1 DynaBass, Koa RSB, Axcelerator, Millennium 4 & 5, G-Bass, and B-Quad.
I also had a chance to play a Cirrus 5 for about a month when I swapped with another Peavey Club Member StuartV
I'd still like to try an original Rudy Sarzo Sig and a Cirrus USA bolt on (because of the 34"scale). Plus I'm always subject to revisiting any model that I've previously owned.

So, should it be possible to wire it passive or with a bypass switch?
I also didn't realize newer Foundations were single coils in VFL shells.

I'm also taking off the pickguard tomorrow to get better measurements of the pickup cavity. Would pictures of anything specific in the wiring be helpful in setting the record straight?

Hiho,regarding VFL pups.My forum pup has 2 wires.
I fitted mini connectors and put in a seymour duncan sb4 musicman pup and played it for a while then refitted the VFL.
The VFL has strong low mids compared to the seymour but the seymour may be a bit scooped in that department.They both sound good but the VFL was in there first and does a great job so ye got yer job back.

So, there are two wires, black and red, that are wired to the pre amp board. There is a bundle that comes from the pickup that splits into a black and bare wire soldered into the bass pot and a red wire that goes to the board.
I don't know what any of that means, but there it is.
I also measured the pickup, mostly for myself, but hopefully it helps someone else. I got 4 3/16 x 1 15/16 x 1 1/16.

Speaking of "quiet" or the lack thereof....
Is your Forum noisy? Like maybe a constant "buzzing" sound?
And is your control cavity shielded? (mine isn't at all)
I don't think I've ever had noise issues. I've played in a couple local places, one local TV studio, and at church with a really high-end system and have never hum or buzz. The output is super hot. I was idly tapping the top of the pickup at rehearsal for church last week while no one else was playing, and you could hear it clearly.
The inside of the battery, pickup, and control cavities are all painted black, but I don't know if it's just paint or graphite shielding.

It's a two piece neck I believe if it has the headstock with the black outline but the bar string tree is a later piece of hardware. That is a Gen 2 fury. Shares the neck and body with the Gen 1. Shares the split P pup with the Gen 3.
The easiest way to tell neck is the width at nut. The two piece neck is C shaped with 43 mm width at nut. The single piece with board is 38 mm width at nut and D shaped.
Here is a comparison between the Gen 1 and Gen 3 that I own. Likely parts of each will be used on the bass you are looking at.
