Hmm - I don't have the 40 or 45 though..... Maybe I'm working my way backwards....

nope, the 20 may be the best of the trio but I've yet to get hold of a 45 or a fretted 20, love my FL.
that's the ticket and now I need a burst 45!
About 6 months ago I bought an Axcelerator 4 off Ebay. When it arrived the bridge PU was very low in output and sounded lousy. I ordered a replacement PU from Peavey and installed it and then both PU's had the same volume when solo'd but sounded out of phase when blended. I contacted Peavey and they told me to replace the Neck PU.
That told me that the new PU they supplied was wound differently than the original but they insisted that they sent the right part. I finally ordered another PU (the neck and bridge PU's are the same part #) and just installed it and now the bass sounds wonderful. This tells me that the replacement PU's are wound out of phase with the originals. So I ended up having to replace both to get it repaired.
As usual, I am knocked out by the great tone of this Axcelerator. They are killer basses if you can put up with the Mother of Toilet Seat pickguards that Peavey put on them. lol
Glad it is fixed but wish I had not had to go to the expense of replacing both PU's. It uses the same PU's as the Cirrus, by the way. Two band preamp though.

was it damaged or is that typical of an original? are the replacements wound hotter?
There was something wrong with the original. I believe it had an open coil.
All this Peavey talk reminded me that I had this Forum stashed in the closet. I don't care for VFL equipped basses much, but for some reason this bass is an exception. Unlike all the other VFL basses that have come and gone, this one has that extra "something" that always sounds musical. I call it "character". If only it was a couple pounds lighter it might get more play time. Regardless, I still dig it.
I am also not really a big fan of the regular VFL pups installed as a pair in Axcelerators, RSB's, later Foundations, etc..
The bigger "wide aperture" single pickup in your Forum is the same (I believe) as the one in my G-Bass.
It is a pickup that sounds better to my ears, maybe I just like single pickup basses best.

I have a Forum too. Mine is black. Great bass but, like your bass, a little heavy.
I really like the 45, so much so that I modified an Ibanez RB630 (P copy) with a T45 inspired circuit.
I'm not hands-on with those pickups, but wonder if the 2nd PU purchase could have been avoided if you just reversed the phase on one of them? Either way, you can always the sell the orphan to recoup some of the expenses.
These two posts remind me of why bassists tend to like basses with a pickup in the Precision sweet spot (like the Forum or T45). It's a very familiar harmonic tone. I tried reversing the phase but it did not work at all then. I guess it has something to do with the electronics within the PU's. They are active PU's that require power to work and reversing the black and white wires did not work.
Someone may one day need the PU I have from this project. In any case, I am glad I did get the electronics sorted. It is a terrific bass.
A-ha! Didn't know they are internally active. Nonetheless, that orphan pickup will make for a nice project!
