Yeah, I went back for it. Pretty clean overall. It needs a good cleaning, and a few odds and ends. I'm generally allergic to four string basses, but the T40 is a must have, and this one is both rare and clean. Add in the price, and it was a no brainer.
I want to do a conversion for a friend who only plays 5 strings. He had and loved a T-40 before switching to the demon 5ers. But, 5 string T-40 spacing is WAY too close for him, and most ppl. It’s a shame the pickup bars and neck heel aren’t wide enough to at least accommodate a typical narrower 5 string bridge and spacing, like EBMM or the even narrower Ibanez Soundgear.
Btw, are there any other dudes like me out there that have come back to playing 4s, after decades of 5 and 6 string basses?
I went from my Foundation, to a 6 string Ibanez in ‘92. Then 6 string Cirrus basses followed. Played 6ers for over 20 years before switching to wide spaced (19mm) Lakland 5 strings for about 10 years. The desire to play vintage basses, and the freedom of less strings, finally overpowered the lust for the low B and C. Now, I’m much happier playing 4 strings!! I have a couple tuned CGCF and DADG, they aren’t used anymore since I’m doing all covers now. The rest are standard or a half step down.
No listener or band member has ever said “I sure miss those extra low notes”.

I play 4s and 5s but all the 4s are strung BEAD. Not really about the low notes but the ease of playing across the neck instead up and down. One of my bands is blues and a LOT of tunes are in E. Another is rock and we play a few "heavy" tunes so the low C and up get some use but having the low B for the end of "Comfortably Numb" always gives the drummer a thrill.
I play both 4s and 5s - I prefer to play 4s, but a fair amount of the music I play requires 5ers, so I play them when I need to...
Tried 5 strings a couple of times the last 5 stringer was a Peavey International, still prefer & play 4 strings
A Foundation 5 is my workhorse 5er - it's been a great bass, and only cost me $150, with a hardshell case:

Man so he parted with it.... That has to be the holy grail of T40'S right there. Sad in a way . Hopefully it went to an appreciative new owner

Unbelievable price for such a rare instrument. I’ve paid more for a regular T-40!
