The Foundation S, with the traditional P/J pickup configuration, could very well mean "standard" or "split coil". I dunno. Peavey, like many other builders used Standard, Deluxe and Plus as identifiers on their guitars and basses of the time.
Don't forget the Foundation S pickups were made by Schaller in Germany. I always took the "S" to mean Schaller.
Yep. Super Ferrites are a great replacement for Super Ferrites.

EDIT: By the way, I prefer the VFL pickups to the Super Ferrites. I don't say that in front of the faithful because I will be stoned to death.

Guitar Center had a Foundation 5 black/maple for $199. I tried to resist but did buy it and it arrived today.
Everything was out of adjustment and the neck was mounted crooked on the body so that the B string was on the edge of the fingerboard. I corrected the neck mount and did a quick set up on it and it plays great and sounds better than great. The B string is kind of wimpy but that may improve when I install new strings.

LOL Cowboy!! I've had one VFL pup Peavey and the sound was ok but not stellar. I think there have been differences in the VFL's over time and then there are active and passive ones I believe. And different passive ones depending on if they used an active pre. So it's hard to make a blanket statement on them. I've personally never met a SF pup I didn't like but that's me. Everyone entitled to their opinion!!!
I don't think they are a size that other pickups will not just drop into the hole and fit.
I think, if you have the urge to replace the Super Ferrites, then you should just go find a different bass that you like better and set the beast free...there are lots of people out there that would love a stock Foundation bass, or may be willing to trade a Fury or something for it.
I guess the question should be, what sound are you looking for?...Super Ferrites are obviously a unique sound, and if you are not into that sound, then there are plenty of Fury basses with split P pickups (if the Precision sound is what you are after) that can be had for way less than they are worth.
If you want the sound of a Jazz bass, then there are lots of pretty darn good Squier Jazz basses these days that can be had for a couple hundred bucks.
What don't you like about the Super Ferrites?
I prefer the sound of Super Ferrites.
The VFL's in my Axcellerator (traded away) and in my RSB Koa (sold it) did not really do it for me.
They are definitely very different sounding pickups ...to me the VFL's sound hi-fi , modern, smooth, and the SF's sound raw, aggressive and unique to all other bass pickups.
The "wide aperture" single VFL in my G Bass sounds better to me than the paired VFL's in the other two basses.

What are passive VFLs ? VFL is Peavey's registered trademark for their active humbuckers. I've a couple of Foundations with passive single coils in VFL shaped covers but they are not VFLs.
Not by me you won't. My '95 Foundation 5 has my favourite passive Peavey pickups, much more to my taste than my two Super Ferrite Foundations. The active VFLs in my Cirrus are, of course, the schnizzle.
I thought Foundations had VFL's at the end but they were passive or so I thought???? I had a Grind which was passive and thought they were VFL's. Sorry for my mistake....please educate me!!!

Congrats! Ha!! I had the exact same problem on my mid 90's black Foundation 5 and NO amount of adjusting the neck/body would correct it.....so, i reset the bridge (filled the holes and redrilled).
Its a STELLAR bass and it was stupid cheap because of the neck/body slant....i always make sure the screws pull thru freely but tight on the body to insure the body/neck pull down tightly.
You dont want wobbly screw holes in the body, just enough to allow the screws to pull the body tightly....glad yours worked but i will seek another one of these for crazy cheap if i can.
The neck on this Foundation 5 is insanely good and it sounds great....i dont know if i would take $300 for it as it sits today...the neck is special but yeah, the pickups look like VFL but are single coils and sound great too.
G-Bass description includes ...Wide Aperture VFL Plus Internally Active Humbucking Pickup.
I think the Plus designation refers to the Wide Aperture VFL.
Wide Aperture meaning larger size (along the length of the string) as compared to the skinnier standard sized VFL's.
I think the Forum bass had the same Wide Aperture pickup as the G Bass.
Maybe the Rudy Sarzo Signature bass also... it has two Wide Aperture pups but they talk about those being ceramics.

Sarzo Sig pickups are under wound T-40s in a plastic case. Less inductance = more highs = apparent mid scoop = "high fidelity". Also lower output.
I also have a black/maple Foundation 5 - mine came all nice and put together straight lol. Very nice bass - but it’s hanging on the wall ever since I picked up my two Millenium 5’s!!! Won’t go back to 34” scale passive. But - put me in the camp that likes the VFL as much or better than Super Ferrite. More versatile, if less distinctive, tone. For me though - the Milly preamp pups/pre is where it’s at. Love that tone.
After further tweeking with my bass head I am able to get the old foundation with the SF. Pickups to sound amazing! When I first plugged in with it set for my other basses it just sounded tinny and week,I cut mids and highs and now it's clean and punchyYep.
