A while back I was looking at used Peavey basses on the Guitar Center website. There was a late model Foundation 5 for $199. They called it fair condition and the photos were not too good. I did not need it but it was so cheap I bought it.

When it arrived it looked better than I thought it would. The neck is very clean and the body has some chips and dings but not too bad. The bad was that it needed EVERYTHING adjusted. The neck was even mounted crooked so that the 1st string was too close to the edge of the fingerboard.

I cleaned and polished the bass and hardware. I reset the neck and adjusted the tilt just a bit and after a complete set up and new strings this is one great playing and sounding bass. For less than the cost of a Chinese made instrument I have a solid USA made bass that is very good sounding. The B string is even great sounding.

I know I am preaching to the choir but this turned out to be such fun to take an unloved bass and give it some TLC and have it turn out this good.

I totally get that - I bought a Foundation 5 years ago, and plenty of 5ers have come and gone since then, but the Foundation 5 is staying... I replaced the original bridge with a Fender MIM bridge for little money so that it shares the same string spacing as my EBMM - it's a real player that sounds great, and has an excellent B string:

The neck pocket on this one is quite tight but I was able to shift the position in the neck pocket just enough to center the strings on the fingerboard. I was playing it again yesterday and was enjoying it very much.

Interesting....my neck pocket was very tight indeed...i always make certain the neck screws will pull freely THRU the body so as to pull the neck/body joint tight.

I just picked up my Foundation 5er where it sits out with no case for months.....darn near in tune!

Adding to the Black/Maple Foundation brigade. My 4-string still kills it whether in my hands or others and while I hesitated to change the strings that came on it in case they were part of the mojo, it has been amazing with any strings I put on it. Tight neck pocket on mine too.

Peavey basses were a best kept secret for a long time for bang for the buck all of mine punch way above their weight ($$) class. I have sold a bunch over the years that I should have kept but I just don't play enough to justify a lot of basses and still I have too many. Three Peaveys (Verdine, DynaFive, FoundationFL) at home and several stashed at studios my wife does not know about, shhh.
