For sure, that's what I thought you meant, the edges are boogered up and restricting the depth into the wrench. I dunno, maybe try around 120ish grit to initially clean it up. Maybe follow up with 400ish to smooth it..?
If that doesn't work, perhaps getting a replacement nut will be in order. @mech will know what would be a suitable replacement. Gibson uses the same sized nut, but I'm not sure of the thread pitch.

Another thing is make sure there's no troubles with the pots or preamp,the wiring inside can be like spaghetti.
