I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting with strings lately. It’s difficult to find tension charts for many brands of strings, and even more difficult to find 35” scale measurements. So, I’ve been using neck flex as my indicator of which sets pull more.

Round core DR strings have more flexibility and therefore give the feel of lower tension, all while pulling as hard or harder than comparable gauge hex core sets. Also, with the added flexibility, they buzz more than hex core. I’m fine with a 45-105 set of Hi Beams on my 34” 4 strings. But, I don’t like a 45-125 on my 35” 5er at all, and don’t want to crank on my truss rod anymore.

D’addario has a tension chart online, and all their strings are hex core apparently. I’m starting to find I prefer their Pro Steel set that’s 43-63-85-107. It gives me lower action with less buzz and less tension. You could buy a 135 or 145 B and a 30 C from just strings and have a fairly balanced set.

An even better balanced and lower tension set would be 28-40-55-75-95-135 . That’s the set my next 6er will get and my 5er is now wearing those gauges (BEADG). Love it! I started w/ a 45-95 set and bought the 40 and 135 as singles. The string tension for every string is between 34 and 36 pounds: very balanced and buzz free too.

The Fodera strings feel great, I don't think I like the SS for this bass. I have the sunbeams and will put them on later this week. I really want to try a set of Cobalts as well. They are my new favorite string. I may end up with XL's like everything else I play.

Good news is whatever I try out if I don't like them I can put them on my Q6. That neck can take anything!

I’ve been using D’Addario Pro Steels on my TL-Five. I use the super light gauge and they’ve been working great for me.

Check out the Cobalts if you haven't yet. I've had nothing but good experiences with them on several basses. Still may have a custom set made.

The wide nut is 1st Gen only....not nearly as many of them around here in Peavey country.

Not exactly sure how many and what years the 1st Gen was produced?
