The pickups in these are pretty strong. It looks to me like the foam under the pickup has deteriorated. It may be an easy fix.

Are those good pups? Can one benefit from replacing with Active EMGs or shop pups?
I think that I am happy with them. The OLP was modded with a Nordstrand p'up, fully shielded, and wired with CTS pots an Orange Drop Cap, and a series/parallel switch. The neck was great...I just wanted something different.
The TBC was REALLY NICE. The only problem with it, was the neck width. When I traded I thought I could get used to it...but I am MUCH happier with the Peavey Neck.
So I don' t know if I am trading up as much as I am finding my favorite.
The p-j pickups peavey used are either schaller liscensed Dimarzios(Early Foundation S/Dyna S) or in house alnico V pickups( Later Furies, Forums, and Unities). These are powerful and warm. Many people replaced them with aftermarket and found little change, some even found that they preferred the originals better. I am a fan of both passive basses and peavey pickups, so I wouldn't switch to EMGs, but if you like the sound of EMGs they should sound great in that unity.
I bought the Unity LTD listed here a while ago.. one of the P pickups dropped like that... pickup is still fine.. needs to be opened and glued back up.

Early 90's Axcelerator 5 35" scale W/Lane Poor's. As far as I know the only set of LP's soapbars made to fit a Peavey
Mid 90's Fury, nothing special, just that P-bass sound but less weight

Is your Koa Unity tempormental with weather/humidity changes? I've wanted one.. my Alembic goes wonky all the time..
Have you guys seen one of these? Early 90's I think. I keep forgetting to run the serial number. Its an Axcelerator unlined fretless with a 2tek bridge I found on CL here in Austin. 18 volt active, plays and sounds terrific. $165.00 if you are curious.

I traded my redwood 4 for a walnut 5.. was kind of looking for a cirris-ish 4... I believe with the millenium upgrade this may be another botique competitor..

Absolutely super sweet. I have a gold six string which I really love. You are fortunate to have found the 2-Tek version, I don't think there are many of those around. Goregeous. Just thought I'd give a quick little report back...had band practice tonight and introduced my new girlfriend (Peavey) to the band. Played it all night...played great, felt great, and sounded great. Looks like I found my new main bass!!!!
My band mates love my bass. The singer picked it up to try it (he can't play but you know what I mean) when I was taking a break and when he put it back he said "Niiiice.... this has to be expensive?"

Forums seem to go for cheap as well, but they don't appear for sale as oftern as Furys and Patriots. Foundations are still a bargain too, just not quite the give away they used to be.
