So I've been scouring the forums for info on the peavey dyna bass (80s version with schaller hardware and super-ferrites and not the one with stack knobs) and one thing I haven't found is how it behaves in passive mode. If theres a better place to ask about this, please let me know. I know the controls are volume and blend on the 2 larger knobs, 3-band EQ on the 3 smaller, and the active/passive switch.

The treble control is actually two pots in one. In active mode it is a center detent boost/cut. In passive mode it is a passive tone. The center detent in passive mode is actually the tone half rolled off. It sounds like a foundation or a hot passive jazz bass in passive mode.
I can probabably help.. I've owned two to 3 of each of the USA basses they've produced...
I've owned this model in both a TL-5, Foundation and Dyna.

NOTE.. the Active/passive was a marketing thing.. this was right about the time that actives were coming main stream. They used to market it as "what will you do when the battery fails.".. I've actually used it like this several times.. flip the switch.. adjust to taste.. bump the amp volume.

Thanks for the info. I'm a big fan of passive basses, but want to try an active again (I used to have a 2-band soundgear but found it lacking in warmth or personality) and the dyna would let me have both in one. I've been big into USA peavey since I got my T-40 (and my amp/cab setup is 70s/80s peavey as well!) so this looks like something I have to try for myself, I'm fond of narrow jazz-like necks, love the schaller hardware, heard rave reviews of the super-ferrites....
Now I just need to save up some dough!

This Dyna is like a 1/2 way point between active and passive.. they are "warmer" than a Cirrus etc..
The output is lower with the preamp switched off.
The 2 band Soundgear comparison may be slightly unfair to the Ibanez.. this is not a in the same caliber as the Peavey...
A ferrite bass is different than your T-40.. not as "flabby sounding" will feel much sleeker.
I'd put a $300 value on your suggested dyna.... IF open to a suggestion/opinion.. pop the extra $$$ for a TL-5.. they do have ferrite era TLs

The T-40 is my flatwounds bass, bridge pickup can get nice and funky while the neck pickup really thumps, and sounds great with a pick. The soundgear was a 90s SR-400, that I got for not much cheaper than Dynas are going for these days!
I have a jazz bass with Dimarzio model-Js but overall right now I'm looking for something with a little more variety in sound to use as a main gigging bass (plus we're starting out with a variety of covers), and from all this information this model Dyna bass is what I'm looking for. If I was a 5-string man I would definitely go with the TL-5, but for whatever reason I like sticking with the 4 string , dropping to D when needed.

I have had a Peavey t-20 for over 25 years- will never get rid of it. I have a washburn b 10, I'm thinking of selling it. Looking for something with two active pick-ups, but don't have tons of money. Any suggestions?
Not sure if you saw.. there was a rare Siena Burst that went for $120 on the bay last week.. I was snoozing or it would have been in MN by now.

IF considering 5ers.. look for a TL-5.. they range from $280-550 (sometimes more depending on condition).. this is equal or not better than my Cirrus5.. much classier bass. Send me pix before you bid or buy - they had about 4 or 5 revisions (this also explains some of the cost differences)
IF set on a 4.... Look for one of the following.. RSB, Sarzo, Unity, Dyna Unity, RJ-IV OR if you're on a budget a Dyna.. The "unity" are neck through and all botique quality .. my personal preference for the buck is the RJ-IV if you're looking for a stage bass.. it is designed for performance.... hardware, neck profiles and electronics vary - you can PM me pix and I can ID and value for you.
Whatever you do, it's a great time to look for USA basses.. they are now starting to gain value... folks are understanding they're under the radar.

I appreciate the help. I played a Foundation at a local music store for 150 or so, missing two knobs, and was dirty. I wasn't impressed, but lots of TB feedback is positive on this topic. I was wondering if it would be better if properly set up?

How was the physical condition?
I'd guess it wasn't set up correctly.. I've only played 3 that were ---- most were OK.. but not fine tuned.. folks in the 80s and 90s would really dork around with these.
$150 is overall fair depending on the specs and condition.. don't trust an opinion without supplying bettter info.
