U.S. Peavey Club

As you guys may recall, I shaved down a T-40 neck to a hair over 1.5” at the nut, and ordered a couple of “jazz bass” nuts from a reverb seller. Description said 1.5” width. I received 2 that were exactly 1.65”. Then, the seller told me I had received the correct nuts and that his stock (with same item number) was all 1.55” wide. Even with photo proof, I was told I received the correct “jazz” nuts. SMH!! I’m awaiting the seller to send another nut that is supposed to fit, to rectify the situation. We shall see. This is my second not so great experience on reverb, out of about 7 total. With nearly 400 positive feedback transactions on here and the auction site, I’m about ready to shut down my reverb store and never buy or sell there again.

I wonder if a jazz neck T-40 would sell? ;-)

I have way too many basses, and enough parts to build 2 T-40s and have one that is a complete all original one, not parts thrown together.

All of these are good recommendations. I always used normal round wound Rotosounds on Foundations, even the fretless - Swing 66 Stainless iirc. Sounded great. Something a matter of preference go with what feels and sounds good to you, the SF pickups (and VFL) have good range so you can eq out any harshness from specific strings pretty easy. I used those Dean Markley blue steel ones back in the 90s on my pink one, they sounded great (for the first week or so) then fell off fast and had to be boiled all the time - I don't recommend those unless you love restringing...

I'm not sure if I put this in here or not but this is our full performance from 'Da Big Daddy G Show' that we did back in the beginning of June. It's one of those late night, middle of the week Austin public access channel shows. I think I linked another vid from back in October when we also appeared on there back then but the mix wasn't the best for vox etc so I just did an instrumental. Not too many vids out in the wild of guys using TL-Fives so I thought I'd share......it's a joy to play! Oh....and I threw in plenty of mistakes for free! :D

Question....which USA Peaveys come in 5 string and are either passive or can be run in a passive mode? I would like to get another 5 string for a church gig I'm doing. I prefer passive these days to be honest. Also, I plug in directly and the sound man does not like active basses. I'm playing passive for the most part in my classic rock band so it could see some duty there as well.

The ones I know of are Foundation 5 and Dyna 5 (I think can be run in passive). Any and all input welcome.

Who's recorded sound do you like? I will note if you're doing CCM, a trendy compressor will negated the active/passive.

The easiest to get (active/passive) are early dyna and TL5

Fair point on the compressor, I am leaning towards a P bass sound these days. Not specifically trying to copy anyone's sound. My passive Peaveys, Fury, Slant Fury and Patriot all give me some nice flavors of that sound but they are all 4's. I have a 4 string SF Foundation that does it's thing very well also, therefore the Foundation 5 would be a good candidate but the few on the market right now are over priced. I found a Foundation 2000 5 string which is in stock at my local GC. I'm going to check it out Wednesday.

You are full of good ideas...LOL. Well to be honest, I've never filed a nut before, I'd be leery of the extra tension in the thin Peavey neck and it would be a mod. If I had a true beater, I might try but all my Peaveys are original and very good or excellent condition. I guess there's also the risk that the B string will sound bad once you get all the work done.

Never played an Axcellerator. I do see a lot of them for sale and always wonder why.

Here's a last minute query for you knowledgeable Peavey-ites. I'm about to sell my Claro Walnut Cirrus 6 to a fine American gentleman. Before it goes off across the border, I'd like to be certain it's not going to cause either of us CITES ulcers. From all that I've been able to read the bass should be claro walnut on walnut body and walnut with maple neck. No bubinga or anything else that might be troublesome. Am I wrong about this? Help is much appreciated. [Yes, I know I shouldn't sell a beauty like this; however, reading music and playing a 6er is a quick means to clunkers for me at least.]

You should have no CITES issues with that bass. SHOULD is the key here. Ignorance is sometimes found in government employees and you could encounter one that does not know the difference between pau ferro and rosewood. Might be wise to include a printed copy of Peavey's specs for the Cirrus.

I favor the 6 when reading since there is so little shifting involved. We each have our preferences, don't we?
