As far as my bass I may refinish it as in a "professional job" strip and restain (satin or gloss) or color tint in a color I think looks good , That's the refinish I am talking about for my bass
Of course I have to inspect it closer , It did ship from a cold climate down south and it took a while shipping and in my experience with some shipped guitars & basses , I have tweaked the truss rod and restored playability , Not the case everytime but I don't think someone had the saddles slammed and actually played it the way it arrived ,Maybe you've never dealt with instruments being shipped and the affects the shifting and humidity changes can have on a bass or stringed instruments under tension especially if it is tuned to pitch and subject to what I mentioned , Doesn't happen everytime but it definitely does happen , So again I say truss rod , You can beleive what you want and that's ok too , Doing this dance so long I got a handle on it and it'll playing great

From 135 basses over the years I doubt 30 were bought local. Had them shipped to damp dreich Scotland from sunnier climates in 3 continents. Been dancing so long my feet hurt.
I would have bought that one if I didn't already have a pair of SF Foundations. That is one of the more rare and very desirable finishes. If you truly don't like the finish, I recommend you sell that bass and buy one more to your liking. There is a good possibility that someone here would trade basses with you.
That looks like mahogany to me. Walnut doesn't have the distinct red tone or the same grain that yours has, and I don't think Peavey was even using walnut then. Either way it looks great.
I agree with others. Natural oil finish on mahogany. I would give it a good clean up first and see if it needs anything more.
The TL sounded amazing last night. I took my Sire to Thursday nights gig and I think I upset my band mates. 
It just doesn’t hold up to the TL.....(IMO and theirs) I’ve got another gig tonight down at the Austin Rodeo so more fun times are to be had. Carry on!

Here is an auction ending today for a rare passive P/J Forum. It says it doesn't work but I'll bet it is an easy fix. I have one and it is a killer bass.

Not the whole story. Once the saddles are set, one time as part of a multi-step setup, the saddle height won’t need to be touched again unless string brand, wrap type, gauges, etc are changed. If you stick with the same strings, only a truss rod tweak is needed to raise or lower your string relief (or action, as some call it). The truss rod tweaks are usually needed after seasonal temp and/or humidity changes.

The master himself, Carl Pedigo, that helped put Lakland at the top of the bass biz, is a friend of mine. His videos show exactly how a bass should be setup.
+1 on that Forum. Great bass and most likely a pot or jack issue to get it up and running again.

Finally got around to rewiring my Verdine White Signature bass (a rebranded Rudy Sarzo) to a passive V-V-T set up and gotta say I wish I had not waited so long this is a super sweet and quite unique tone monster. Played nicely it is smooth and rich sounding but dig in a bit or get to slapping and V starts to roar & show some teeth.
The original DynaBass circuit was essentially shot as was the output jack when I got the bass many years ago but I sort of put up with it not wanting to modify the bass, but that kept me from playing it as much as it should have been. So if I was going to do this given the provenance of the bass it was going to be first class. I considered many options looking at all the contemporary active/passive options keeping the original pickups but in the end deciding to go with a quality passive wiring job. I dig into my stash and found a pair of 500k and a single 250k Alpha that would fit as well as an NOS Sprague .047 mf Orange Drop. Ordered up a gold panel jack and started practicing my soldering, not my best of skills. Once I had all the parts gathered I started pre-assembly of all the parts before attacking the bass, remembering this is the part that always daunted me when I was building guitars and basses. Everything went smoothly and it worked the first time (gasp)
One thing I missed was that the cool anodized red knobs I got from Carvin years ago would not fit on the Alpha 500K volume pots :-( so again i had to dig in the stash and came up with two choices I had from my effects mods that fit and looked good. I decided on the red top option but the black knobs look pretty bitchin' too.

No way, it ain't exactly a thing of beauty, soldering is not one of my best skills. I was surprised when it all worked the first time, expecting it would need a professional rescue job, but my frugal self made me at least give it shot.
Not my best work but everything tested good p2p and it is dead quiet so it works for me. I was expecting to have to pay for professional rescue so double pleased.
Been working on my Bartolini equipped GV. Shielded the cavity, redid the grounds and replaced the jack. Helped but I still had noise and hiss on the treble control. Replaced the pot and no change. I think I'm going to shield the pickup cavities next. If that doesn't get it I'm going to suspect its the preamp itself.
