hi! here's my foundation 5 that I was going to paint a few years ago, but never got around to it

this is my second bass. got it while in high school in 2000 and will never get rid of it

next year I'll pay someone to finish it up, will probably do rerancher shell pink with beige/off white pickups

Reminds me... someone on eBay or reverb was/is trying to sell a converted T-40 as a “rare fretless”. Whoever converted the neck used dark filler, so it’s hard to see the lines. But, they’re there. Hope nobody falls for the bull***t and pays the inflated price.

I disagree.
It's fairly rare, being factory fretless and sunburst, not an opaque finish.
It looks in great shape, doesn't look ragged out at all.
It's worth whatever somebody is willing to pay for it, it's an 80's quality made in USA bass.
People are paying two and three times that much for 80's Japan made Greco, Tokai, Hondo, Fernandez P Bass copies and/or J bass copies with just okay pickups.
None of the knobs are original, a set of knobs are $12 and for $20 you can get something cool like zebra-wood.
It also needs a truss rod cover, which is also no big deal at all.

Since I paid £100 for mine inc hardcase,I have to agree with @ATLbassist regarding the price.

it's an 80's quality made in USA bass.

The 80's were hardly a high point in USA manufacturing,in fact Greco,Tokai etc forced the US to up their game.

Yes, I understand that lots of us have bought Peavey basses for stupidly cheap...but clean Peavey Foundations are not usually going for $120 now, and fretless sunburst are definitely less common and will typically cost more. Peavey prices have crept up in the last five years. When did you get yours?
I agree Fender and Gibson were both farking up at that point in time but in 1985/86/87/88/89/90 Peavey quality was holding steady to their standards.
Matsumoku and FujiGen did help force Fender to snap out of it and get their shilt together, but not a lot of their instruments ever had great pickups IMO.
Some of the full on early "lawsuit" copies were very good but I've seen a number of Japan made 80's basses that were definitely not better than some of my cleaner 80's Peaveys, some Japan brands were fantastic but some are over-rated for sure.

Just checked. It was early 2018. Bought it from an Italian DB player studying in Edinburgh.

Not sure I agree regarding pickups. The early Matsumoku (Wotans) had DiMarzios and later Matsu's their own version of DMs,no different than Peavey having Schaller build them DMs. I think some of the Washburns had EMGs.

I'm not knocking Peavey,given how many I've owned I'd be a damn fool if I was. Just looking at the bigger picture.

Let me ramble for a minute.... Real Rics (4001 and 4003) are junk too, in the sense that they have design flaws that the company refuses to acknowledge or fix. And, their attention to detail is not on par with other brands in the same price range. I've always loved the look and therefore have owned 3 from 3 different eras: 1976, 1992, and one from around 2008 IIRC. The '76 had bowed from bridge to tip of headstock like a banana, and was unrepairable. The '92 was new when purchased, and sounded great. But, it still had a grand canyon sized pickup route to deal with and a piece of junk bridge. The 2000s one had the same design flaws of course. Rant over .

and I now trade off playing time with this Gold Foundation 2000 that is just amazing to play , it kinda plays itself with crazy low action and great feeling maple neck

Hipshot makes a nice replacement bridge and I'm not afraid to use a router. I've never owned a real 4001/3 and probably never will. I'm content with my Cirrus fleet (although one may have a date with a router soon...)

I agree. I have only played 2 4001/4003 that I would deem decent. Not great, but decent. One is my friend's 74 Jetglo 4001. If I could willingly pay market value for it, he would gladly sell it to me, and to be honest, I would enjoy the heck outta it. However, I have an 87 Patriot that I converted to a virtual Ric for about 1/6 the price. It's not a top shelf Patriot (because we all know it was pretty much a student level bass), but it's build quality is still at least as good as most any Ric I have encountered.

Yeah, I put a Hipshot bridge on my 2000s Ric. It is not cheap and a new EXPENSIVE bass shouldn't immediately require a replacement bridge, and some aftermarket pickup route hole cover.

In case y'all don't know, the Ric bridge is not adjustable for intonation, while strings are on it. Also, the whole saddle assembly (all 4 string saddles = 1 piece) is loose/free floating and only adjustable for height via 2 allen screws. So, each string is not individually adjustable except by filing the string slot deeper. And, the saddle assembly teeters on the ends of the 2 allen height adjustment screws. It can rock back and forth, completely messing up intonation and string height... there's nothing you can do about it.
