Picked this up a few months ago but I don't think I posted it. '92 with the SF's off CL for about 80 bucks. Someone scuffed the paint unfortunately but I'm gonna do a little DIY paint job to the body.

Good grab. Early 90s is a weird era for foundations. Still, they have good bones for sure. Not quite as nice hardware as the early ones, but good bones nonetheless.

Yep. Are those the later SFs that are just marked PEAVEY in bottom corner? I've been told they are the same, but the mold for the original shells was damaged, so they made a new shell. Nice bass.

I wanna say 93 was when those were the issued, but it may have been sometime in 92?

I have at least one foundation like that, where it's the older SF pickups in the newer body. I also have at least one with the newer body and the newer SF pickups. You have the ones that everybody knows are still SF. You done good.

I have that same exact bass, except the finish on mine has aged to an almost cream color. Got it at Guitar Center a few months ago for $140!

Does anyone have a source on the capacitors peavey used in the 80s basses (or similar). They're known .022 microfarads, but to my ear they roll off differently, almost not as efficiently as modern caps ive ordered off ebay and the like. Im talking about one like the small blue one here (not the treble bleed). Even if someone could let me know the "variety" of cap this is, i might have a better time searching for replacements. I can't imagine the only option i have is harvesting old used parts. Thanks!

They are ceramic caps and haven't been available as new parts in decades as best I know.

Thanks for the heads up on them being ceramics. I ordered these caps, hopefully they’ll have similar performance. (100 PCS) .022uF, 22000pF, 50V, X7R, 10%, Axial, AVX - SA105C223KAA | eBay

Glad you didn't post this last week...I was down near Clearwater. I like this one much better with the black hardware. There was a one with gold hardware last year on GC site...we called it the wedding bass.

And a bit of before and after on these grimy pickups in my project B-Ninety. These seem to have been super glued at the factory, but I broke the seal, popped them open, cleaned up the rust and a good bit of the tarnish with some metal polish and a bit of fine sandpaper. No ceramic bars to be seen, so I assume they’re alnico! I had to add foam since the glue they used allowed for springs, but I prefer foam anyways. There’s still a bit of discoloration on the poles, but the rust was the real enemy here.

Impromptu appreciation post for my VFL Foundation. I feel like sometimes these get overlooked here compared to the SF versions, but honestly I like mine just as much. Last year I took mine to my local GC and had the neck buffed from the factory satin to a really nice gloss, and it came out really nice. I also replaced the wimpy stock bridge with a Schaller roller bridge, and it really improved the tone and stability imo. The pickups on these are super versatile and I can go from squeaky clean bridge tones with beautiful harmonics, to pretty decent punk picking tone on the neck pickup. Not to mention, these don’t suffer from the bilaminate neck issues that can plague some Peavey’s. I really like this bass, and while the early foundations are better stock without a doubt, I’d put mine toe to toe with any SF foundation any day, and I think one would go well in any peavey lovers stable. If only mine wasn’t that ugly Fisher Price red lol

I am SF centric, but do appreciate the tone of that era of single coils. They have a more 'traditional/middle of the road' tone to my ears-not a bad thing at all-just my observation. SFs are a little more unique and aggressively voiced and may not be for everyone. However, in this particular Club, they are deified. haha
