U.S. Peavey Club

Wow! Thats 2 of those Dyna's that have shown up this week! Glad you snagged it....I snagged the red one that was at Music Go Round that Raw N Low posted a couple days ago

I made an offer on that red one and got a message back that it had sold. Nice bass and I certainly like the color better than the white one I just bought. The white one looks to be in good shape though and for that price is a bargain.

I knew the links would not work for long since I had bought the basses. Yes, the deals were too good to pass up and I love cleaning and adjusting basses to get them to play their best. It will be fun.

One thing I do not yet know is if those late model Dyna basses had VFL's or single coils in VFL shells. I'll know soon. The preamp is the same control configuration as the late model TL5's so I am hoping the electronics, including PUs, are the same as the TL5 with the added active/passive switch.

I am ernestly trying to reduce my collection of basses so it was an impulse buy this morning when I saw those bargain prices.
I wondered that too so I downloaded the manual from the Peavey site...its says they are "internally active" humbucking, and an active preamp...and that preamp seems to be a doozy! They only have the manual for the 4 string "Dyna Bass 91" but I figure the 5 string will be the same.

Great! So it will have electronics very much like the TL5 which is a wonderful sounding bass.

Damn Chuck ! Let others play in the sandbox. :) Those are amazing deals and where Peaveys SHOULD be priced.

Sorry. I didn’t mean to be greedy. It was early and I was on my first cup of coffee when I saw them. They are both models I have been wanting. I do wish the Dyna was a different color but it does have black hardware so that is a plus.

I was kidding, I know you know that...

I'm not sure I agree with you there.
That mahogany Foundation cost Chuck less than a used Chinese made Squier J Bass made out of basswood.
I think the Dyna 5 was priced way cheaper than any USA made active 5 string from anybody else.
Every time I get a screamin' deal on a Peavey bass I think there is no way that they would be priced like that if they were most other brand names.
Right now GC has a number of G Basses for sale and all of them are half or less what a Carbon Fiber necked active bass costs from other brands.
The Cirrus and Millenniums are less expensive than you would pay with other brands as well.

I just enjoy it when I get a great deal and this morning I got 2. The photos were typical of GC in that you can't really tell much about the condition. I'm hoping they are in nice shape.

And how long have those G basses been sitting there ? They're too expensive. I know what you're saying, but inexpensive was the entire reason why we love Peaveys so much. So what if their perception used to be less than what it really is, but Fenders are WAY overpriced. You're paying to have that Mercedes badge on the hood of your car. Look at used USA Cirrus's now - They are priced anywhere from $750 - over $1,000. On the higher end of the price scale that ends up being like 70% of retail price. They really hold their value. So when you say there's no way they'd be priced like that if it were another brand, like what ? Dean ? Epiphone ? You can have them.

My point is that 1980's Guild Pilots are going for $699 at GC right now and they are a poplar bodied PJ bass ...where a Peavey PJ bass from the 80's/90's is less than half that price, like the mahogany Foundation that just got sold for $199.
While I love my Guild Pilot, it is not a better bass than most of my Peaveys.
Those G Basses are sitting there because a lot of people bought G Basses in the last decade for way, way less than they should have been able to.
There is no other used bass like a used G Bass that can be had for $549 (with a case) that I can name.
My active poplar bodied EBMM USA SUB (4 string) bass with a slab body (no belly cut or forearm cut) cost me $600, the active Dyna (5 string) that Chuck just bought cost him $250.
Dean and Epiphone are not USA made basses and their quality varies wildly with both product lines, so apples and oranges.
Fender and G&L USA used prices are nowhere near as low a used Peavey USA basses and I'm not sure the Fenders are any better than many of the Peaveys.
I will concede that some of the 90's Fury and Foundation basses were not as good, but my blue Gen 2 Fury bass is definitely as well made as a Fender or G&L, my mahogany Patriot definitely is as well.
Millennium 4, Millennium Plus, Millennium 5, Cirrus, Axcellerator Plus, Axcellerator 5, TL5, Sarzo's, RJ's are better built than USA Fender and USA G&L and they can be had used for less than a used standard USA Fender Precision.
The perception is that Peaveys should be cheap because they came late to the party and sold basses for student programs at very low prices.
I'm glad they are cheap, as all of us are here, but it is a perception thing, not directly tied to build quality.
Used USA G&L's sell cheaper than used USA Fender's, and they are at least as well built, I think they are better built, it's a perception thing.

Again, you have your theories, and I have mine. Those Guild Pilots have been there for over a year. Obviously priced too high. The Gbass is just not a very good bass for the money. Sure it has a cool neck, but it's 20 frets, a single pickup in a bad position. The Bquad has 24 frets, 2 pickups in the correct spots. The Gbass is a one trick pony. The market sets the price and you know that. That's why the USA Cirrus' sell out eventually on GC Used, and like all semi-boutique basses, they fluctuate in price.
It's cool if we disagree.

GC sold one of the electric blue colored Guild Pilots last week for $699 and I was relieved because I wanted it...really trying to not buy more basses.
Prices on Reverb right now for Pilots are $550-$1150 for various versions. Sold prices here seem to be in line with that, though not many get offered or sold.
Pilots sell slowly these days, seems lots of folks see the body shape as too 80's, but the people I know who have them are keeping them.

I like the sound of a G Bass better than a Cirrus, Axcellerator, or Sarzo, and the B Quad also sounds too modern for my tastes.
I don't think the G Bass is a one trick pony, I would guess several people here would agree, Mech and TinIndian both have 'em and like them a lot.
Either way, it's still an active USA made bass with a graphite neck and Pau Ferro fretboard for the prices GC has listed for a used Indonesian G&L Tribute bass or used Sterling Ray 34.
Yes, I have no problem at all with a friendly debate either. :)
