I think its a 1983. But I haven't verified it. Only the first couple years had the pickup rings, right?

Definitely on the pickup height. When I put it together after taking it apart to clean it I had the pickup too high and the E was crazy snarly, and the G would barely play. Lowering the pickup took care of that.

I have one of the last model Dyna 5's. This one.

There has been one on Music Go Round for a long time but they were asking $499 for it. They have lowered the price to $300 so I encourage someone to buy it. The PUs in these basses are humbuckers. The electronics are pretty sophisticated and the real plus is that in passive mode they sound a lot like a Palaedium. They have that wonderful growl.

Just FYI, the only difference between the Milli pre and the stock Cirrus pre is very little in terms of overall tone. In other words, it will always sound like a Cirrus.

The stock Cirrus pre is VERY flexible. The Milli pre is less flexible in the sense that the bandwidth for each section like bass, mid, and treble is shorter, but the variable mid allows you to add a lot to the ... mid range. :)

I like that I can add low-mids to add more bottom end without it getting boomy. To me, that's THE magic of the Milli. So, if you're expecting the seas to part and the sun to shine all day long, it's really not that different.

As far as pickups go, I don't know of ANY pickups that sound better than Peavey VFL's. They are the best I've ever owned and I've used them on many non-Peavey basses with a Bartolini NTMB preamp, and a stock Cirrus preamp. There is a video on Youtube where I used a Milli pre and Cirrus pickups on a Kawai FIIB and it sounds 100x better than the stock Kawai.

I find myself keeping the mids flat, boosting the lows a tiny bit, and just using the EQ on my Eden when I use my Cirrus with the Millennium preamp. I've never been a fan of variable mids.

I'm still planning on swapping out the Cirrus (and MAYBE the Millennium) preamp on a few of mine for the Nordstrand 3B. It made it sound better than they 'normally' do, at least to me. Best I can compare it to was my friends Roscoe SKB with a Bartolini system.
I need more 'fun money' for all this stuff....

I sure HOPE we get to hear and see clips of your Cirrus projects with your own handmade preamp. I'm super looking forward to it.

I did this for my Patriot and it turned out great - looks snazzy, too! I made the full-pocket shim for my Foundation, but I may try this on my slant Fury once I (finally) begin the restoration process.
