Murder is posturing for them. They've been doing this since 1953 unfortunately.
Like it or not, we have a vested interest in keeping SK and Japan safe. Both are strong countries but NK can bring a WHOLE lot of destruction onto either in a heartbeat. Imagine what a major war in Asia would do to the world economy not to mention the death and destruction? The fact that we have been backing SK all these years is probably the reason why there even IS a SK right now. Having the US involved IS in their best interest.
I bet there's a geometry teacher in Alabam who can figure out how to solve this. Let him put his knowledge to better use.
If NK ever decided to start a war it would be complete suicide on their part and it would be over in about a week.
Wait, no, that's if I was president. You're right, this will likely result in thousands of deaths on the "good guys" side.
Do the south Koreans have decent bomb shelters in their basements and neighborhoods? Do they have drills to practice running to the shelters whenthe sirens go off?
Hardly a surprise that they have the evidence to prove what everyone knew to be the case; NK sunk the boat. In relation to the "all out war" the most sensible response was from one of SK's ministers that I heard on BBC Radio 4 this morning. He said, we are used to NK saying they will launch an all out war, they make this threat all the time. We will proceed as usual.
And that's the problem.. war there would be horrific and no one, even the North Koreans want it, but South Korea and the West have never really gotten too tough with North Korea. There have been some heavy duty sanctions, but then NK will do something else and threaten something drastic and the sanctions are lifted. That, and the prospect of millions starving in NK is not too savory. Somewhere along the line, there has to be a change of procedure in dealing with them.
In an absolute best case scenario with absolutely everything going our way, yes.
More likely you would see a death toll in SK unparalleled and destruction on a horrific scale before they're inevitably brought down.
It would also be interesting as to what China would do.
I think the only way to deal with them at this point, aside from wiping them out entirely, is to just ignore NK.
When they are sinking boats and killing people is ignoring them the right answer?
Some politician, cant remember who, equated NK to a spoiled child who will yell, threaten, tantrum and scream until they get what they want. As long as they keep getting what they want, they've been given the thumbs up to keep on acting that way. Ignore them completely, and they will eventually get the message but who knows how far they will go to get attention once they realize that the world is ignoring them? If they kill now, I cant imagine what they might try to gain back the attention.
The thing that also really sucks about dealing with NK, is the fact that you're dealing with a country whose people are on the verge of starvation. If you keep sanctioning them, you will basically create a humanitarian crisis.
Probably not, but what better options do we have? We'd have to pull an Iraq on them and clear house, set up our own puppet government, and the likes. I'd rather they just go away.
Yep, and on top of that there's always a country out there with a beef against the US and their allies that is willing to deal with NK for buying weapons or Nuke Tech. We've also been soft on tracking ships that have weapons. We should have boarded and sunk them on site. Instead we complain about it to the UN who do nothing.
Sinking other countries ships is an act of war. Its not "illegal" for nations to buy and sell weapons to each other if they are not signatories to the various treaties that prohibit such things. If the US, for example, were to board and sink ships leaving NK for Syria, that would be an act of war (assuming they were found out).
I have no idea. Do sanctions actually do anything? Does tit for tat violence accomplish anything?
If life was a James Bond movie I'd say assassination is the answer. Unfortunately, it is not.

It really seems like this is the best answer doesnt it? Just send someone in to take care of things, buteven then, that carries its own baggage.
The right kind of sanctions do eventually work. But as I had mentioned earlier the N Korean people are really really poor. To sanction that country (withhold food/grain shipments, etc) would doom thousands. You would have to come up with something very creative.
You can try to totally isolate them, but then you will always have countries that believe in the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" principle and undermine whatever the West might do.
