Correct, but that was years ago. NK and SK have techically been at a state of declared war for as long as I can remember.

North Korea is like that douchey person who comes around who nobody really likes but they tolerate.
Of course, I'm talking abou the NK government and policies when I say that. I know that the government is not representative of the kinds of people who live there.
my high school government teacher proposed a hypothetical solution to the cold war that I think would be applicable and effective: initiate massive leaflet drops of Sears adds all over the country. Show the entire NK population what they're missing out on. The populace becomes resentful of their tyrannical leadership and either
A) rises up in revolution and overthrows Kim Jong Il and his ilk
B) waits until Kim Jong Il finally croaks, peacefully disbands the authoritative government, sets up a new one.

NK & SK have been under a truce since 1953, so they have been technically at war since the 1950's, and have never actually signed a peace treaty, therefore have never been at "peace" of any kind, just in a "between hostilities and negotiating peace" limbo.
I get the impression that is exactly how the NK regime likes it, as it keeps them in power, and their people subjugated.
We should just take out NK and then say, anyone who gets upset about it or threatens us will get taken out by everyone who wanted NK gone. Just use the same diplomacy against them, just on a little more extreme level. Peace through war.

I'd expect that ordinary folks in North Korea having been getting the worst of this all along.
From what people who were stationed in Korea have told me, the estimate is that if the cease fire ends Seoul is gone in less than an hour.
Ageing dictators who've shown little regard for the future of others - including that of their own father - care even less when they've no future themselves.

Revolution, while a nice idea in theory, wouldn't work because of the extreme brainwashing DPRK's citizens have endured. Keep in mind this is a country that will have you shipped off to a concentration camp just by saying Dear Leader is not so "dear." If I remember correctly, there was a HUGE outpouring of grief when Kim Il Sung died. The sad thing is that these same people are facing famine, extreme poverty, and poor health conditions, among other things.
As for the leader, from what I read the next leader (Kim Jong-Un) was handpicked by father Kim Jong Il himself, who is just as twisted as his father.
I don't know what to think honestly.
unfortunately, i think the reality is that nothing will happen cause nothing can happen. there is no solution. the NK government is like a spoiled child, except that it has the power to kill thousands upon thousands of people if it is not placated. that's no ordinary spoiled brat. more like the spoiled kid with super powers in that twilight zone episode.
and the very ugly reality of sanctions (as pointed out) is that it doesn't hurt the ruling elite; they maintain their access to food, clean water, medicine, and sanitation. the people on the bottom (whose only crime is being born north of the 38th parallel) starve. its was tragically under-reported that the iraq sanctions under bush 1/clinton allowed an estimated half million children to die.

Well that's the thing - it's not the sanctions that will kill the people, it's their own government that fails to roll up their sleeves and do what they need to do to save their own people now that the sanctions push them (the governing) into crisis.
The sanctions in Iraq did kill thousands, but it 'aint exactly Bush or Clinton's fault. These children died while Saddam and chronies lived lavishly and did nothing to help their people.
This is pretty much exactly what would happen if we were to levy more sanctions on NK.
yup, that is what i was trying to say. sanctions are a fine avoid-war policy if we were dealing with reasonable leaders. the catch is that the governments that require sanctioning don't care about the rules or their people. the ugly thing is that the u.n. knows this but can't do anything else. a true catch-22, and nothing changes. and the poor get screwed. but like i said, nothing changes.

You could try to move to NK and enjoy it's prosperity and even-handedness. I hear it's a veritable worker's paradise.
They were within their borders, right? I don't care if they put up a huge sign on the border that says **** OFF, it doesn't warrant the murder of 46 people.Did anyone notice that this ship was pretty close to NK territory.
Seems kinda like a little provocation gone awry.

I'm thinking that it was no coincidence that it was right at the boundaries. It's easier to deny, manipulate or fudge the facts if they were to get backed into a corner.
