Ultra minimal pedalboards

I do need a better cable management solution.

The board is one of those craft signs you can paint “LIVE LAUGH LOVE” on. Picked it up for a buck at a thrift store.

Could absolutely live with this. I do have a bigger board I need to construct and still have a couple spare tuners and drives - and a Julia that’s confused.

Probably should’ve stuck with my Zoom b1four lol. I probably won’t need more than a chorus or octave (other than dirt of course) and actually probably just the tuner, comp and zio (or Pedalnetics DI) but have this obsession with having capabilities that I could possibly need that extends far beyond my hobbies. :)

Revised because I have an idea of this board for PA/FOH only( mostly mildly dirty) a second when playing through my “rig” ( 3 layer dirt and a chorus) and then a bigger one that stays home (once it’s complete, I will post about it- it is a memorial to my late future son in law. Too soon, G!)

I would think that with the existence and on-going development of multi-FX units these days; HX, Anagram, Quad Cortex etc, the "minimal" pedalboard could conceivably just be one box ... which would be pretty minimal. No ?

Although I do see folks here on TB that add other pedals to multi-FX boxes because apparently there are some things the multi-FX boxes just don't do very well, or to the users satisfaction.

Agreed! Posts like #24 and #52 really encompass a great ultra minimal board that just makes sense to me. Also things like the Tech21 Flyrigs & some signature pedals with tuners like the DP-3X and SH-1.

Nothing against the other awesome mini boards in this thread, especially the Tuner + Preamp/DI crowd :thumbsup:

If I were to construct another myself, I would dig out my MS-60b+ and run it into an Active DI box, and have the other output go to my amp.

Yes. I have and have had them. And yes there are things that they don’t do well. Also, I and many others want an option when playing live in the event other pedals or mfx units fail- or if I fail during menu diving. My favorite tool for a quick jam at home is a B1Four. Bigger board has a HxOne. But live I much prefer individual switches for the effects that I want. If that means 1-2 layers of drive, Octaver, chorus or filter, that’s 5 switches and then the mfx is stomp xl or bigger. And if it goes down, i usually have at least a DI with me.

80% is dirt + Zio after tuner and comp.

fair enough, but that would not really quality as a "ultra-minimal pedalboard" right ?

I just watched the @IvanBassist vid about his new pretty minimal board. Cali76 => Anagram => Sushi Finally tube DI. Those are on a Metro 16 board.
That seems pretty minimal and it has a backup DI with the Finally box.

I am interested in all this because I'd like to get to a board that delivers what I need for FX/tone shaping and DI but it also very "minimal". So it's very instructive to read about all the approaches. The Anagram seems like a good (mostly) all in one to me, but I am watching and waiting for some of the kinks to be worked out before I seriously consider that route.

Definitely not into defining or haggling over terms for everyone of these threads. “compact?” “minimal?”. Whatever. I’m like you and love ideas. @Rocksolid has a swiff tuner on a studio boost mini. and 3d printed riser. Probably plenty for some. I like dirt and chorus so usually a minimum for me is Tuner and 2 levels of dirt.

This is as minimal as I get with effects required. The compressors in the HXS are pretty good I think, and running the MXR M81 which is not colored at all I run an amp sim in the HXS. Not pictured is my Loopi pedal aux switch for switches 4/5. Using this to change modes in the HXS gives the option of running snapshots(scenes) or stomp mode for individual effects.

It’s a Nano board :) Previously I used the Metro 16 with the Quad Cortex

Anyone here tried a @Pedalnetics PortaStomp? This seems incredibly useful and might be the thing to finally convert me to just running the Stomp as my entire rig for certain applications. My big hangup was never having a clean DI/Line isolator solution. Once I had to introduce something reasonably pedal sized, I thought "well, might as well have a pedal" then once I had one pedal "well, one more can't hurt!" and so on. I was considering trying a DIm Stick until this got posted:
