Doug Keyser and Watchtower. He's one of the most Prog Influenced Metal Bassists ever. This entire band truly bridged that gap long before anyone else.

He and his Travis Bean TB-2000 create one of the most beautiful bass tones ever. I love Shellac!!!!
Not around anymore but, the Music and Bassist for Blind Melon was a huge influence on me wanting to play....
That guy has great tone.

What are some under-rated bands with good bassists? I always liked The Afghan Whigs and thought they were a highly under-rated band. Their album 'Gentlemen' from 93' still gets into my rotation on occasion.
I really liked John Curley's bass playing and tone on that album. 'Black Love' from 96' was also a really good album from them. I do give them credit because the broke up and got back together and released albums in 2014 & 2017.
I'd like to hear what bands that you think were/are under-rated and deserved more notoriety and air play . Thanks.
**Try to keep it around the 90's era, but if there is a very under-rated band from a different era that you'd like to share with us - by all means do so.

They're well-known here and among musicians' circles, but Doug (Dug) Pinnick and King's X are criminally underrated.

They are still around. Different singer, obviously, and the original bassist only plays part time with them as he has another band. I am pretty sure he used a 70's jazz bass of some sort. His tone and playing had a huge influence on me, as well.
Yeah, after I wrote that, I realized they kinda are stil around but.......
I saw the new singer, he was pretty good.
In that video above it looks like he has some kind of Gibson.
A movie is coming out soon too I believe...... If Hoon didn't die this could have been my favorite band for a long long time...

My absolute favorite band!
Steven Severin's technique and sound is quite distinct - mostly upstrokes with a pick and drowned in chorus. He really captures the Post-Punk eighth note drive with the modulated bass more common to Goth bands (like their buddies in the Cure).

Carbon Leaf isn't necessarily underrated so much as they're not very well known, but they've always had excellent bass players between Jordan Medas (90s to 2008) and Jon Markel (2008 to present). Love Jordan's work on the fretless in this one:

Dave Meros of Spock's Beard always comes to mind when talking underrated bands.
