Late 70s, early 80s there was a very good band from Louisiana named LeRoux. Leon Medica was the bassist...excellent.
I don't know if you'd consider the Shins underrated, but I gotta give a shout out to their fantastic bassist.
Here's one, kind of a one-off and a cover, but unknown/unsung and worth celebrating just the same
concrete blonde..look them up yourselves..singer is female (johnette napolitano) and the bass player...you wont be disappointed.
The early 90s Emo band 30.06 with the late Sean Roberts on bigass T-40 and singing.
Pete Rizzo's groove is ALWAYS so smooth that it's almost invisible. And... talk about tone... His Stingray growls!!!
The Figgs. Been around a long, long time. Have really matured along the way and have always been one of my favorite bands. They're from Saratoga so I was able to see them a ton throughout the 90's, and they make at least a couple visits locally per year. I always try to make their shows. The bass player, Pete Donnelly has also played with Tommy Stinson, NRBQ, and Soul Asylum, as well as created solo records and produced for others. Amazing band, especially live, and just an awesome bass player.
What are some under-rated bands with good bassists? I always liked The Afghan Whigs and thought they were a highly under-rated band. Their album 'Gentlemen' from 93' still gets into my rotation on occasion.
I really liked John Curley's bass playing and tone on that album. 'Black Love' from 96' was also a really good album from them. I do give them credit because the broke up and got back together and released albums in 2014 & 2017.
I'd like to hear what bands that you think were/are under-rated and deserved more notoriety and air play . Thanks.

Man, thanks for bringing them up. I had never heard of them. They're like an angry Duran Duran (and that's a good thing).
Ha! I had heard of them, but never listened to them until this thread. Your description of their sound made me laugh so hard milk came out my nose. And I wasn't even drinking milk.
I can't sound like him either, I play finger style.
I am thankful they were based out of Chicago in the 90s. I grew up on the south side and seen them at all the clubs, including the Cabaret Metro supporting Nirvana.
Only Tool is above the Lizard to me as far as favorite bands and bassists.
"Post punk"?....but he was one of the originals...with Siousxie....still love The Scream, 1978 and Hong Kong Garden blew my mind in 78
