under rated bass players

Colin Moulding - XtC

EDIT: And I think Carol Kaye is a legend as well... not really under-rated.

Here's a couple female bassists for consideration, though...
Tina Weymouth - Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club
Sara Lee - Gang of Four, Robert Fripp, B-52s, Indigo Girls, etc... she's everywhere.
Kim Gordon and/or Deb Googe - holding things together for Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, respectively... earns my respect.
Tal WIlkenfeld - Future under-rated bass player... she has Jeff Beck on her rookie card and I see great things to come for her...

+ 1 to Tina Weymouth. Coolest bass lines ever on many tunes. Perfect for the music. Who is Pete Wentz? Do I need to care? Is he the guy who gets his unit out for the world to see, or is that someone else?

To me Mike Mills from REM is hugely underrated. Great bass player who wrote a lot of the tunes, sung lead and backup and played his PBass with a melodic approach that along with the jangly guitar hooks, really created REM's sound. A lot of the time, his bass lines are the lead melody without being solos, while still holding it down.
A huge inspiration for me to this day, and who I think of when I work with a alt-rock group. Check out his lines from earlier REM like on Reckoning. Truly great.
Also, Kim Deal is another underated female bassists.
