Underrated: Fred Neil, one of the best singers ever that never made it big, only by other people covering his songs he put his foot in the door, and, by my humble opinion, his original versions are better...
Overrated: all those screamers like Brian Johnson, Ozzy, Axl, they all sound like they're constipated and fighting very hard to overcome that issue..

I feel like I was overly snarky with my previous post in this thread so here are two underrated vocalists IMO:

Derek St. Holmes who did some great work for the Nuge. He's also really interesting to hear in the fab documentary "Hired Guns" (highly recommended)

Billy Price - a fantastic singer who fronted for Roy Buchanan.

I recently discovered one of the most amazing soul singers I've ever heard. And he's white. His name is Jarrod Lawson. Currently on tour overseas. I'm sure nobody has heard of him on TB.

James LaBrie of Dream Theater is dire and he has only gotten worse as the years have went on. He sticks around in that band like a bad smell, despite ever-mounting pressure from fans calling for him to step down. I do rather think that DT would have been a better band if they stuck with the instrumentals.

For me the technical skills of vocalists don't count as much as having a unique voice. No one else and no one prior to them sounds like Robert Smith, Ozzy Osbourne or Lou Reed. I wish we had more unique voices that kind of broaden the things human beings can express with music. I'm not in any way against musical skills. As a bassplayer I kind of resent some players who are really gifted and have something to say but don't have the skills to progress. But I would always prefer someone, who has something to say but not much skills to someone who has all the skills in the world but nothing to say.
