Unexplainable GAS?

Funny, that's exactly what I was thinking of doing! Especially since I am also GAS'ing for a 70's style Jazz and an outboard Sadowsky preamp, and GAS funds are limited. :bawl:

Well, none were new or expensive and I've done some good trading for some of them so the net outlay was modest. My luck and timing was exceptionally good too. One I got by custom building a head for a guitarist; parts cost + bass = even exchange, so it only cost me a bit of spare time. The drivers I got on closeout and one was secondhand. I'm also single, no kids, good job, little debt and don't drink/smoke/gamble/do drugs etc so I have a bit more disposable income at the moment. Nice change from a few years ago when I had to sell all my gear to make ends meet and a couple of the new purchases are effectively 'replacements' for what I sold back then.

This is all just fun for me, and I don't want to sound like I'm boasting. I was actually making fun of myself. I'm very fortunate to have just about everything I want bass-wise, and apart from maybe a Peavey T40, I'm content. I have a moritorium on instrument and parts buying for a while, but that's OK, I'm well sated.

Hmm, i just had an idea. I can get a Lecompte custom. Neckthrough with an upper Rick body and on the bottom(G side) half a t-bird. then a fretless neck, T-bird humbucker at the bridge, P pick up at the neck with a Rick pick up in the middle of those. GAS solved!

Well, I slept on it and I think I'm going to go with Lakland Bob Glaub P/J. As time goes on it's the type of sound I keep hearing in my head that I'm not hearing from my other basses. I think I'm going to sell off my Warwick Fretless because while it's a great bass, I haven't been using it, and as an amateur it's not like situations come up where I may need it. I think fretless basses are things I have gas for and then once I get one, it goes away and I never use it. I'll probably hang on to my Cirrus though as it is a great bass and is wonderful for all the other tones I may like to get.

That was my latest GAS inspired purchase (last week). I absolutely love the ugly thing, Seriously underrated piece of gear in my opinion... :bassist:

i constantly ahve incurable GAS; it's like constant burrito night in my brain. My GAS list:
P-bass (sometimes. I'm primarily a J kinda guy)

not long.

next summer or over winter break i'm gonna try my hand at building my own pbass. or jbass with a p/j pup combo :crying: i wish i had money.

Curses Bass Central! :) They had a GORGEOUS Glaub USA P/J 3TS with a Birdseye board that was a Demo for $1800 and it's gone. I can get a new one but its $2300...eh...dunno.. $1800 is already pushing my luck :)

Although I'm not quite sure if I'm best for a P or PJ. I can get a new Glaub P for $2000 and there's a gorgeous White/Red Tort/Ash? (looks like it)/Rosewood with the pickup cover and jazz tapered neck that they have that I keep thinking about. The P might be the way because that's' the sound I keep trying to emulate on all my basses 90% of the time.

Cool. I'm in Australia where they're rare; I've only ever seen one for sale here. Hoping to find one in the US without a case that could be shipped in two parts as the shipping alone is more than what they usually sell for, but I'll cop the freight for an early peach.

I suffer from this syndrome as well. I want about two to three basses a year. I almost purchased a Spector Euro that was on clearance at G.C. for $900.00. After playing it for a month they put the yellow clearance tag on it and that was the last time I saw it. Right now I am still in GAS mode for a MM Bongo fiver. The bass shop that has it hates it because it has been on the wall for about a year. I play it everytime I go in there and absolutly love it. My wife understands my sickness and yeilds every now and then but for the most part she helps me through it. She applies dreadful reasoning and common sense to the situation. As I always tell her, " The voice of reason is a cruel one." :hmm:

Ah how gears change.. I just remembered that Jack Read (Link Removed) builds custom P basses for $1700 including choice of finish (unless it's custom, that's $175 extra), choice of alder or swamp ash body, custom neck profile and choice of neck options, and any electronics you want. I think that's the better deal, plus he's local to me so I can see and play things that he has around that will give me a better idea of what I want.

It's a guy thing. Replace "gear" with "wife" or "SO" and the statement still works. :hiding:

Long story short: Gear Acquisition Syndrome is legal even for us married guys, and also less expensive, less guilt-inducing, and less life-threatening than Girl Acquisition Syndrome. So, when that Grass Is Greener angst hits I simply acquire a trophy bass. :smug:

I went through a stint with p basses and after trying a Lull and a Lakland USA Glaub. I thought the Fender American Deluxe p bass was every bit as good. As far as I am concerned the P bass sound that most people are after can be found on less expensive basses. I mean, how much can you really improve on the p bass? Anyway, I haven't purchased a bass this inexpensive in five years. :smug:

Well, thanks to another thread on the Talk Bass "Basses" forum... I'm GASing for a Benevante Vortex four string... *drool* That's alot to say from me, considering I only GAS over something that I have played, have seen played in front of me, or have at least heard be played... I've never heard a Bene in my life, but I want that damn blue burst w/ maple board on their 'site soooooo bad!
