I didn't "get" Fenders at first. Seriously, I would see an iconic bass player playing a P and think "doesn't he know there are better basses out there? Someone should tell him". Fast forward ten years, now I love them. If allowed only one bass in my life Fenders would have a pretty good chance.

I only got serious about bass about 2 years ago so I had never actually played a Fender bass before. But today I tried out a made in Mexico Fender. Invalid Link Removed Unimpressed! Strings too far away from the fretboard. Neck too thick, but then I'm used to my Ibanez.
For $800 I would expect much better.
I tried out a $1,500 Fender. That was a little better but still the strings were too far from the fretboard.

I have to agree with the majority here that it does not appear that you are judging Fender basses fairly as a category. A lot of the issues you raised are entirely settings- and setup-dependent. Sure, it's possible to encounter a bad specimen here and there, and Fender's quality control is not the absolute best in the business (that title may belong to Ernie Ball Music Man or Lakland, IMO), but it's a legendary and popular manufacturer for a reason.

Please use the search function next time. There’s a new one of these threads every week. “I played an expensive fender at guitar center and it wasn’t set up properly. I’ll stick with my (insert cheaper brand) because it’s better.” Whatever helps you sleep at night I guess.

The neck is not to thick. It's just that your hands are to small.

Yep, Fender never makes their fretboards tall enough to meet the strings, Ibanez, on the other hand knows how to build a proper height fretboard. If Fender would just use that extra wood that makes the neck too thick to build up the height of the fretboard then they'd be just as impressive as Ibanez.

With all due respect you need more mileage under your belt. You don’t hate fender basses you hate high action which is understandable. Just like everyone else has said.
