Unimpressed by Fender basses

I only got serious about bass about 2 years ago so I had never actually played a Fender bass before. But today I tried out a made in Mexico Fender. Invalid Link Removed Unimpressed! Strings too far away from the fretboard. Neck too thick, but then I'm used to my Ibanez.
For $800 I would expect much better.
I tried out a $1,500 Fender. That was a little better but still the strings were too far from the fretboard.

Virtually any new bass needs a set up.

Fender has those pesky tuning thingamajigs you have to fiddle with, every now and then...

... oh, and don't even get me started on how painful it is to dial in the sound in my head, with those little volume and tone knobs...

... here's the kicker... I blame Fender for calling it an output jack, when all my friends call it an input jack. Since music is universal, shouldn't we call it a...

... Universal Jack?

I have a Mexican Fender PBass and love it. My previous Bass was a Spectar...also had a Peavy. Play what feels good to you and hopefully it is set up right. Some stores do not always check their new basses that roll in. One thing I learned is we all have different tastes. Me I love Fenders.

GC has a thing about not maintaining their stock. Strings 1/2" from the fretboard are pretty much par for the course there. I guess it's a good way to stop all of the kids from coming in and noodling.....

At the Dayton Ohio GC they will gladly set the action to your liking if you are serious about the rest of the bass. Just tell the Luthier on duty and in a few minutes they will do a basic setup for action and buzz etc., no charge. Even if you are only in the try-out phase.
Plz don't take advantage of their policy.

Well, you can’t change the neck profile. I’ll give you that. That’s all about preference. However.... The bridge, nut and neck relief are all very adjustable and can allow the action to be setup to your personal preference.

I test drove a new Toyota but there was not enough air in the tires. I don't see why people think those are good cars.

There's these little things called bridge saddle screws. There are 2 per saddle. They go up and down for string height adjustment.

Roundwounds don' t last on them!

I have to change the strings every 2 months or so since 1985! (That' s a scandal )

Those guys owe me a lot of money!

It took long enough, but someone finally blew the lid wide open on this fraud Fender has perpetrated on millions of people. I feel the most sorry for all the bass gods who have played Fender instruments; they could have been even better if they had only known they were saddled with inferior equipment. And how embarrassing that it had to be pointed out to them by that guy in the guitar center bass room? Well at least we all know now to stay away from this garbage.

I would where did you play these Fenders? Certain Guitar Centers, and other chain stores to some degree, are know to have really poorly set up basses, and guitars, on the sales floor.

I just set mine down by the curb, and it isn't even trash day... the broke down lawnmower will probably go, before the Fenders.
