Univox bass

Could be a winner, looks like a flamed top on that, unusual. Doesn't say how old. A bit pricey, but if it's a player, could be a find. I'd give it a try.

Yeah, it looks to be older, 70s/80s vintage - if so, and it's made it this long still playable and in good condition, it's likely a player.

Looks cool! I never played one of those, but who knows? I did have a cheap Univox solid body once long ago, as well as a head and cab. Money was short and they were cheap. All pretty BLAH, and sold as soon as I could buy better. But this could be completely different......?

That's the thing about a lot of these Japanese instruments 60s-80s, they got better over time for sure, but at any point along there, you'll find true gems and true junk, both from the same factory. This looks to be one of the better ones, but hard to say until you play.

Ug. This guy, doesn't seem too motivated to sell. Went down to the area he told me he lives, and finally got him on the phone. He seemed genuinely irritated to be getting a call, and mentioned at least twice, "I drive truck for a living". He also felt the need to mention that in every email. I told him repeatedly, via email, "OK, let me know a time and place that would work best for you". Then he's says he's actually in a different city, about an hours drive away.
Proving to be a lot of work for something I was on the fence about.

That's a Matsomoku-made instrument for sure. But it's the earlier mid 70s vintage, and those aren't really as good as the later Aria Pro II and Westone basses from the late 70s to mid 80s. I wouldn't pay more than about $300 for that bass, and that's assuming the neck is straight and playable. The pots and switches on these instruments are lousy, and may need replacing...if they don't, then it's because this was a 'case queen' and didn't get much use over the years.
