Setup is your friend. My friend worked at a music store. Every afternoon he'd take an instrument off the wall and do a setup. Suddenly these instruments would sell within a week. Guitars and basses that had hung on the wall for months to years.

Weren't some of the MIJ Jazz's sold in Japan only an odd 32" scale? I think I remember seeing some at some point.

Fender Japan made both a 30" (smart scale) and a 32" medium scaler. Here is my medium, a fantastic instrument:
Well, regardless, it's hardly representative of what a Jazz is, or can be, correct? I mean, you don't judge all Tbirds according to Epiphone, or all P basses according to the $300 special in the package deal that the stores sell you at Christmas.
Respectfully, if you truly played a short scale Jazz bass, you played a very uncommon Japanese model that doesn't represent a typical Jazz bass. Jazz basses aren't my thing but they are excellent basses, and... 1) they wouldn't still be around - or widely imitated - if they weren't good basses; and 2) a sample size of one, and an unusual one at that, is hardly a basis for forming an overall opinion about all Jazz basses.
You just committed the Talkbass cardinal sin. Thou must never say you don't like a Fender. I say that 12 hail Carols and 10 our fathers (Leo that is) and you will be absolved of your sin.
Must've been one of those cheap Sadowsky knock offs of a Fender.

So you're not sure if you were playing a Fender or not sure you were playing a Jazz bass but you're sure it wasn't a Squier?
Regardless, I wouldn't blame any company, even Rogue or Stagg, because I happened to play one bad bass...sound is subjective and loose knobs, well, they're just loose.
That settles it. I'm selling mine.
Yeah, that's not really a representation of all Jazz Basses so just trying one to make a decision of wether it suits you or not is not going to work.
I'm no fan boy but a good Jazz is hard to beat, versatile and easy to play and killer slap tones. Not everyone's cup of tea but it's hard to ignore how many records they are on for so many decades and still widely used today.
