Don't know how far to the 'fanboi' side I am but this thread is very amusing. Keep going.

It has been established that short and medium scale Jazz basses were built- in Japan and also that they are rather rare birds. The fact that the OP ran across one as his first playing of a Fender Jazz bass is an anomaly, based on the millions of Jazz basses in existence.
OP- consider your true but anecdotal experience to be just that.
Perhaps find at least half a dozen 34" scale JB's to play and if you find all of those lacking, nobody would be making fun. You would then at least have a legitimate reason to not like a Jazz.
As it stands now, you have not played a Jazz, as commonly defined in the bass world.

They put the better knobs on p basses because they don't need as many. Quality over quantity every time.

I saw a guy in a guitar store today.
He was messing around with a short scale SX bass that had been marked down 3 times.
It had 2 pickups sort of like a Fender Jazz bass, and a similar body.
He couldn't make that thing sound good at all and kept messing around with the knobs.
Conclusion: Jazz basses suck.

But ... but ... he's ragging on ... JAZZ basses, man. A venerable favorite. I do realize we do do that every week however - JAZZ basses man!
Me either. 30" scale makes it something else. A jazz bass is 34".
That is like saying, " I have a Corvette, but it is a little one that says Opal Cadet on it. It doesn't handle very well and it isn't very fast which is why I do not like Corvettes".

If this was actually a short scale jazz bass I can only assume we're talking about a USED bass? I mean, those Japanese short scale Jazz Basses were discontinued YEARS ago, right? Used obviously means it could be in any condition between mint and junk.
Also, many Japanese Fender basses came with really poor ceramic pickups. Some came with Fender USA pickups but I think all of those had "US" in the model name (I'm no expert though)?
If it's one of those Japanese Fenders with the poor pickups then yeah, I can totally understand about not liking the sound. They were pretty mediocre with the stock pickups. But going from there to making some general statement about not liking Jazz Basses is just silly.
Still, there's nothing wrong about not liking Jazz Basses. I absolutely detest many Talkbass favourites too.

You missed the point. Fender Japan lists the scale of it's instruments as 1/2 the length of the actual scale.
In other words, medium scale is 832mm but they list the scale length in their propaganda as 416mm. What I was saying is that you have to double the figure in their literature to come up with the actual scale length, then convert it to inches.
And yes, they are incredible and you should buy one tonight before you sleep.
