Jon "Bowzer" Bauman (born September 16, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American singer, best known as a member of the band Sha Na Na, and game show host. Bauman's Sha Na Na character Bowzer was a greaser in a muscle shirt.

Bauman also appeared as the host of the Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour alongside Match Game host Gene Rayburn. The show aired for a single season on NC from 1983 to 1984. Bauman also appeared as a guest on Super Password in 1984, and is referenced in "The Chanukah Song" by Adam Sandler, "Parents Just Don't Understand" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, the NewsRadio episode "Chock", and in "D'oh-in' in the Wind—the sixth episode of the tenth season of The Simpsons.

He can be seen as his Bowser character on a limousine television (with passengers Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine) in the Hal Ashby film Being There.

I met Jon "Bowzer" Bauman at a local political rally for some candidates several years ago. He was very nice and I talked to him about possibly booking him for a festival concert.

WOW…so for those that don’t know, “Being There” is a fine, subtle movie from the Jerzy K novel about how “chance” and coincidence plays a big part in our lives. By chance, I saw it was on the other night. And by chance, when I switched over it was the exact scene you are referring to. And by chance, when I went to pick up something from Lowe’s Sunday, the fellow who helped me was named Chance. I told him about “Chance the Gardener” in the movie. And today, by chance, I see your post.
Very cool.

Why was Jerzy so interested in chance? Well, he was scheduled to be at the Tate-LoBianco party on that fateful night…but his plane was delayed. So by chance, he was not murdered.

Trivia about the film: they use the Deodato version of “Also Sprach…” early in the film. Such a great track!

I like to quote Chauncey from time to time if I feel like expressing a breadth of appreciation for different genres and styles, in music, or whatever, as a flowery metaphor. .

One of My late Dad’s favorite films. I love Peter Sellers but have only started to review and like this film as I grow older. Sellers was a great actor/comedian and comedy reveals a lot of truths about how humans can read deep revelations in shallow comments. His Goon Show stuff is hilarious too. What a talent…I could name a 1/2 dozen+ films that are my favorites!

Goon Show was classic. The Beatles were big fans, and had a bit of that comic sensibility to them.
Dr. Strangelove is one of my all time favorites. Sellers is all over that one. "Animals can be bred and slaughtered!"

I like to quote Chauncey from time to time if I feel like expressing a breadth of appreciation for different genres and styles, in music, or whatever, as a flowery metaphor. .

Truly, this element of the film/book has huge ramifications. There are all the lovely offshoots such as the character being totally honest, being so influenced by television, and especially, his innate wisdom. Of course, the main point is how organizations interested in power are attracted to both sources of money as well as figureheads that can hoodwink the public while being totally controlled.

The plot winds its way through some high-level things…at the end when the power brokers see “Chauncey” as the perfect, next figurehead. At the same time, he is over by the pond….walking on water! That element is really odd because it has no precedent in the film.

However, what that scene does allow is a lovely pivot to one of Sellers’ other wonderful films: “The Bobo.” A unusual, humorous film set in Barcelona about a Singing Matador (“or a Mata-troubadour, I have not decided”) it has a number of “fantasy elements” like the walking on water scene in “Being There.” The Bobo is fairly unknown but it is totally worth a viewing. Did I mention that the gorgeous Britt Ekland is in most of the scenes?

Sellers was unique amongst actors.

In 1994, legendary rhythm and blues singer and pianist Little Richard played himself in an episode of the TV sitcom Full House, in an episode titled "Too Little Richard, Too Late."

In the episode, Joey runs for PTA president after the school cancels Michelle's favourite class. Little Richard guest stars as Denise's uncle and performs at Joey's pre-election rally. The episode also featured Marcia Wallace as the head staff member at Michelle's school, Mrs. Carruthers.

It serves as yet another example of the people surrounding him mistaking his simplicity for a profound depth; in the same way they misinterpret his every utterance as a sophisticated metaphor, his simple physical act could be misinterpreted as a sign of some superior powers. The thing that makes it especially Chauncy Gardner-ish is how non-plussed he is as he takes those steps, as if he's completely unaware of how his actions could be misinterpreted from afar, and yet they still fill his own heart/mind with a sense of awe and wonder.

At least, that's how I remember it!

While primarily remembered as the husband of Betty White and host of TV game shows Password and GE College Bowl, Allen Ludden also released an album in 1964 called "Allen Ludden Sings His Favorite Songs", released for an RCA Records subsidiary. The album is not exactly a rock album, but features Ludden singing pop standards a la Andy Williams or Ray Conniff, including a cover version of They Can't Take That Away From Me and I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face. The album is now out of print, but I guess you can say that the password is "collector's item!"
