Actually the story I heard was that Chris Squire was involved in the forming of what eventually became ELP. They wanted him to play bass and sing lead vocals but he did not think that he was a strong enough singer to sing lead.

Talking about the old band The Nices guitarist, Davy O'List a cantankerous and grumpy guitarist in the young days, seemed to always be the one who "missed out" on big scheme of things. Just "missed" it. Partly due to his own adamant "views" of things.
He subbed for Syd Barret in Pink Floyd, offered, but said no thanks, subbed for Mick Abrahams in Jethro Tull, but said no thanks, and botched himself out of Roxy Music just prior they got signed and started to work on their first album.

My CPA once knew The Dead's accountant, and allegedly when the band bought drugs, the often paid by check. The drill was to write "books" as the descriptor on the bank check at the time of purchase. Needless to say, the band were very well-read.
Aren't all these things when actually forming a band surrounded by too much hype and myths? The band hasn't really formed yet and everyones ideas of how and who to play with is all on anyones wall. How many guitarists haven't we heard of being thought of replacing Brian Jones in the Stones, and so too after Mick Taylor left? There's Jeff Beck, Roy Buchanan, and numerous more that was "considered" by both Keef and Mick, but they ended up doing this or that or miss auditions. Future members and considerations were all over the place if you'd like. One can't verify or deny anything of these claims anyway. Who auditoned for this or that.
We can only know of what's been stated by their own interviews. Both Elton John and Bryan Ferry was considered too to join King Crimson,
after Greg Lake left. Can anyone imagine this... Elton John in King Crimson? Of course, way way before anyone of them got themselves a name. "You Never Know"!

John Lennon's much-hated biographer Albert Goldman accused the ex-beatle of having re-written the song 'Three Blind Mice' over and over again. "You Never Know" is similarly simple and repetitive, and is currently making me simmer with resentment at some of the crimes perpetrated in the name of English Music Hall Tradition.

I know it's contaminating and spreads like a disease. Even I got that phrase in my head due to that line. It's annoying and irritating, and all those irritating things that gets to your ear, like tinnitus, or an annoying mosquito buzz... Gabriel is/was known for producing just phonetic hooks, and then found a wovel or phrase that he could build up a story around. Peculiar it didn't make the charts then...

Before he became a hits machine, EJ wrote (and played) some pretty hip stuff.
Yeah, I know, I heard the early solo album where he actually has a string quartet on some songs, that sounds like Bela Bartok. And Fripp and Bartok goes together so to speak, regarding that atonal stuff. I think it was on the album "Elton John" that just shows his mug on the cover. With the hit "Your Song" but the rest is borderline art rock really.

Stephen Stills auditioned for the Monkees, but was turned down because he was too ugly. He was the one who recommended Peter Tork instead.
My Dad was a drunk, which drove my late mother to Alanon meetings, where she became casual friends with Terry Bozzio, who was himself at the support group to deal with wife Dale's drinking problem.
At the time, the idea of my fifty-something mom being on friendly terms with an ex- Frank Zappa drummer really bent my young mind.
