V Type vs V4/V6 ???

I couldn;t find any info on this, so I thought I would throw it out there.

What is the difference between the all tube "V Type" and the V4/V6 amps. They both are all tube and look pretty similar. Or, the teh VType (which is just labeled Trace Elliot V Type...doesn't have any V4 logo's.....in fact a V4)

Any help would be appreciated.

There's the modern V-Type V4 and V8. Those have a different preamp compared to the older V4 or V6. Them newer V-types have a second, distortion channel and a tube compressor. Older V4 and V6 amps don't have these features.

This is a V-type V8.
The V-type V4 looks exactly the same but with the V4 logo in the middle (and less power tubes of course).

This is a V6. Like I said; it's got a different preamp.
It looks different. Fur, instead of tolex and some other cosmetic differences.

Finally, there's these hybrid V-type amplifiers like the 300H or the 600H.
These amps have a tube preamp and a solid state power amp. They look like the one below.

The amp your describing is a "Trace Elliot V-Type" which is the same amp as the V4. It's 200w all tube. Usually it's in a green tolex instead of the carpet which the early V4's had. That amp came out first then they expanded the line and changed to the V4 and V6 names. So basically it's a tolexed V4

But to throw another wrench into the last statement there are also Dark Green tolexed all-tube V-type's that preceded the rat fur versions of the V-type.

I believe the progression went something like this in the V-type all-tube amps, In Order:


Kaman Era: ~95-99?
  • Dark Green Tolexed 220W (8 & 4 ohms) "V-type" Amp, Trace Elliot Badge
  • Dark Green Carpeted 220W (8 & 4 ohms) "V-type" Amp, Trace Elliot Badge
  • Dark Green Carpeted 220W (4 & 2 ohms) "V-type V4" Amp, Older V4 Badge
  • Dark Green Carpeted 300W (4 & 2 ohms) "V-type V6" Amp, V6 Badge

Gibson Era: ~00-02?
  • Black Buffalo Tolexed 220W (4 & 2 ohms) "V-type V4" Amp, Newer V4 Badge, New Features (Compressor, Distortion, ect.)
  • Black Buffalo Tolexed 400W (4 & 2 ohms) "V-type V8" Amp, V8 Badge, Same Features as newer V4 (Compressor, Distortion, ect.) but w/ Half Power Switch
  • Black Buffalo Tolexed 220W Combo (4 & 2 ohms) "V-type V4 Combo" Amp, V8 Badge, Same Features as newer V4 (Compressor, Distortion, ect.) and in 1x15 and 4x8 combinations.
