V8 project

Just ordered this Schaller fully adjustable individual saddle 8-string bridge. Big fan of Schaller's 4-string 3D bridge and even if there is only minimal difference intoning both as pointed out - it will weigh a fraction of what the beast that came on it does and most likely won't need to be sunken into the body. Good price too. (score!)

I've been on the hunt for one if those for about 3 months...

Looks very cool, JIO! I love those crazy pickguards. And the blue color.

My only criticism is the aluminum strap button plate. Good engineering, but it needs some curves in its shape. It looks out of place sticking out with the straight edges.

Thanks Bruce - I definitely considered contouring the extension, but at the end of the day I felt it being more angular/disjunctive (and closer to the neck) in design actually helps it disappear against the curvaceous lines of the body. Plus, I will probably spray it satin black which (if wearing a dark shirt) will further make it disappear. I've done curved extensions - but I really like this angular version as a counterpoint to the flowing contoured shape of the body. In a way - it ends up relating more to the neck.

This is my removable extension using a Dunlop Strap-Lok system.

Be cautious of the on-line scammers - they stole $66.88 from me thinking I was buying one ~
Yeah. It happens too often.
The bridge you have should get you close enough, I had a Galveston 12 for a while that only had 8 saddles, and the difference between the bass, and octaves for intonation was very minor.

Black poster-board mock-up. Since I'll be adding the large upper section, I think I'll rout for a lower neck pu position to get away from the neck-heal "mud bucker" location. Also may install a Guild RI Darkstar there to replace the neck pu. I've used them in a few basses and they never fail to sound good. I'm not a big fan of the boomy neck-hugging EB-O position.

Whoa! That looks cool whether you need to rout or not!

Weighed in at 9lbs/1oz ... so I lost 11 ounces. 9lbs is better than almost 10 and it balances well. Needs some fussing/fine-tuning but it works. And addressing inquiry about the pointy pg islands having a negative impact while playing... no issuess all, at least for the way I play.

Man that looks :drool::drool::drool::drool::drool:
Totally new meaning on the term ‘lipstick on a pig’.

I’d love to see pics of your shop and tools used.

That's one way to look at it! I've resurrected a number of basses in various states of 'condition' so I just looked at it in the same light, even if it was new. Actually my 'shop' is more ad hoc so not much to see. :)

Can you share more about the scam (item, seller name or link). Those of us buying on Reverb and EBay might find it useful on which sellers to avoid.

Wasn't eBay or Reverb. I found it on a google search - I just clicked every picture of one, including ones on Reverb which had sold. A generic site came up (I forget the name and don't want to look for it) What these people do is create a fake site and post pics found on the net with prices below them. After realizing I was scammed - I noticed pics from tb! It's embarrassing because if I just would have looked closer - it was pretty obvious it was bogus. They do it for all sorts of consumer items, but I was blind-sided as I never imagined an obscure 8-string bass guitar bridge would be someones scam bait. I still find it hard to believe - is this the result of some sort of sophisticated algorithum that creates the whole thing based on one search? Also, I learned that if one of those (not made/sold anymore) bridges do ever come up for sale - they go for over $200. I thought they were still available.

The man is a master, i've seen and played on some of his projects/basses.
Genuinely great person, musician and craftsman.

ah shucks... your'e makin' me blush Jeff! :) Thanks for your kind words!

Sprayed a white border on the neck pu after sanding the Wilkinson logo off. Will need to 'soften' it a bit to align with the more muted engravers plate white. (it's a bit bright now) I like how cartoonish it looks - like.., "neck pu". Also taped off the body for another pass of the bridge rout. I just didn't go low enough first pass. And, I think I can stick with the original bridge pu as I can shift it over enough to line-up the string spacing w/o further routing etc. Anything to keep it easy at this point.

It sure seems like a lot of work from such a base but it's cool.

It just depends on how one approaches such a project. If I were to set out to build an 8-string bass from scratch - the cost would be far more than double what I paid. I took it on because the base/raw materials were nominal considering what I planned to do with it. I took the chance that I could redefine it into a playable, good sounding bass and I'm close to realizing that. Nothing unlike what I have turned around in the past. Only difference is I started with a 'new' bass, of which I only saw as a starting point.

Wow, how did I miss this one? Love this. Makes me want to build one of my own.

Hi Jon - I'm still fine-tuning it. My left hand/wrist is compromised right now (severe Carpal Tunnel) so an eight-string with a big fat neck is 'challenging' to play. I'm having a CT release surgery on the 3rd of Oct, which I'm hoping will give me some relief. So I need to get the action low and I'm considering shaving the neck. It's a set-neck and it's straight so I don't want to mess that up but it's honking' fat.
