the valenti does sound fuller than the fender especially knowing that it's got the bass boosted already. but man, boith do sound pretty good.

I think I prefer the fender except on the slap then the Valenti really out shines the Fender. I think the Fender just sounds less thin then the Valenti- although I must admit that I am not really a fan of either of their tones. Great playing!

It's impressive how the two tracks line up. The Fender seems to have a more even recorded sound as there's a drop in sound level on the left track in a few places.

with that said...I agree with everyone that the Nino sounds thicker...it's probably as much to do with the nordies and the preamp as anything....

I really dig the fat round sound of the Valenti...

the fender, however, has a bite that definitely can cut through...

both basses don't lack in top-end definition and so, either one would be a great choice in a live situation...

my verdict:

Valenti: 9.5
Fender: 9.0
Player: 10.0 - Great groove, and great job of keeping your playing consistant between instruments...

+1 to the above, although I thought the Fender's top end was noticeably sweeter and rounder.

...But I don't play those high notes.

Is this solo'd bridge pickup on both or a blend leaning towards the bridge?

I agree, the Valenti sounds better in the lower and middle register and the fender in the upper register.

For slap, i like the fender sound better. Sounds bigger and a littel scooped, which i like.

+1 on teh great playing as well.

The Valenti sounds good but the Fender sounds a little richer and just more pleasing. It sits in the mix better and seems to support the song and fill it up more so than the over-the-top slightly disconnected sound of the Valenti.

Again, thanks for the kind words on the playing. You'd have to commute to Kansas City, and gas is pretty expensive right now!

I'm really enjoying this thread, since we're actually using our ears instead of our eyes. It would have been interesting if this had been a totally blind test in which I didn't say which bass was which.

The Fender strings are older and deader, which seems to affect the low strings first. I'm not a big slapper, but I do prefer that springy grind of newer strings for slap. As a result, I like the Valenti's slap clip better. With new strings, who knows?

This Aguilar OBP-3 preamp in the Valenti is a new product to me. Usually, I'll pull out some mids for slap, but this preamp doesn't sound good that way...it sounds like they've already pulled some mids. So, a slight bass boost seems to work best.

I've been told that the preamp in the Fender is a $40 piece of electronics. I think it sounds great, and it's totally quiet.

I'm an old school player for the most part. I grew up playing and listening to passive instruments, mostly Fender P & J basses. I always like to hear an instrument's midrange voice, and the low mids have to be able to move some air and punish any drummer that gets in the way.

I may do another comparison with these basses, maybe with the neck pickups, to see how they stack up.

I would love to hear some sound clips similar to these with the basses of other TalkBassers!

F Bass -vs- Roscoe

Well, after everything I have heard there is a noticeable difference between the two. I can't say that I like either one more than the other. They both sound great - thanks in no small part to some awesome playing!

My question to you is this; do they sound different enough to stay in a rotation or do you like one more than the other? Does the Valenti's thicker tone seem more useful to you or is that unmistakable Fender tone something that will always be needed for what you play?

I just bought a 4 string Fender P and am seriously thinking about dropping a J into the bridge position and keeping the bass passive. My Alleva-Coppolo and Valenti are both active/passive and I really want a passive PJ to round out the arsenal.

Good question.

First, I want to play on the Valenti for another month or two. IME, instruments "open up" after awhile and reveal their voice. I don't know why this happens (maybe it's just in my head), but that's my opinion. Anyone else experience this?

Anyhoo, I think that I'll reserve judgment, but don't count the Fender out. I'm sure that Nino would agree that Leo was the original "GAS Master"!
