Valenti -vs- Fender - mp3

Here's another mp3 of soloing, low register to high register, on the Valenti. The sound is much more pointed than it was in my first sample in this thread. That's a result of being rolled just a little more to the bridge side.

Carey,

The FatStack is raised up pretty high. I don't want to get into loose screw territory. I could lower the NP5 a little, I suppose, but I don't think that it's necessary. I don't want the tradeoff of losing the available low end. I'm in good shape right now with the pan control being my primary tone control, as I like it. The NP5 throws more low end around than the Fender P as far as I can tell. Is that the way you intended?

Dbassmon and dunamis,

Glad you've enjoyed the sound clips. It's been really fun creating them, and again, everyone's input is very useful and appreciated!

What? Seriously? Damn. I am 36 and would have guess you were about my age.

I'd call ya Gramps but that nickname is reserved for AJ Brown! ;) What up Andy? :D

You young whippersnappers don't know how good you've got it! I can remember when there was NO TALKBASS!!!

...and check these photos out.

In 1975, at 15, I was ready for the "Show You Rics!!!" thread.... in 1980, I was ready with my brand-new Musicman for the "Show Your Stingrays!!!" thread.

This was all before Nino even starting numbering his basses!:D

1975 I was 5 and about a year or so away from discovery KISS. 1980 I was 10 and playing guitar.

Just a recommendation for ya? Never show those pictures again! :rollno: :p

:eyebrow: I don't know if you were following one of the other threads here, about finishes. Your Valenti was cited as an example of a certain kind of finish. The type of finish being ascertainable aurally on a 128k mp3 downloaded over the internet.:eyebrow:

If you don't mind, could you get some samples of the two basses, respective finishes, get them to an analytical lab, and then post the results, preferably including some pretty spectragraphic type pictures..um pretty please? ;) Try not to damage them too much.

See this is very interesting. I have long theorized that finish has more to do with tone than any other factor. A killer finish on a plywood bass will make it sound, and actually play better, than any Sadowsky.

So many supernatural events are being attributed to this bass that people are lining up in the street just to catch a glimpse. I imagine that Nino will be calling soon to make a six-figure offer to buy it back.

Man, both sound great and very close; your playing, as everyone has said, is also great.
For me, I preferred the P on the very first clip, and the Valenti on the Al Green, but that's just me. The preference was by about .000009999% though.

I think we should have much more of these kinds of threads to educate us all regarding the actual sounds of our instruments.
I volunteer to do a EBMM 5 string vs. a 75 Jazz, because that's all I got. Who else can do one?

+1!

Excellent. I'll be looking forward to checking out any threads in which we have a chance to really listen to some basses.

It's really interesting that when we listen to exactly the same recordings, one person will say that a tone is "round" while another will say it's "thin". One person's "growl" is another's "harsh".

Again, thanks for the positive feedback.

KayCee,
The design of my P5 is intended to make up for the narrower space available in the cover. By angling the poles I make the coil fatter and thus a bit thicker sounding. I guess that can add more bottom, but I was mainly trying to make the pickup sound more like the four string version than some of the other five's I've tried.
I haven't found any unduly excessive low end with the NP5 in my testing. Nor have I heard any complaints of such things from customers. Please let me know if you consider it a problem and I'll do whatever I can to help.

First of all, Carey, I know that I speak for everyone here when I say that we really appreciate and value your input on this discussion.

Earlier in the thread, I used the P pickups only on the basses backing the "Let's Stay Together" Track. The basses were both set flat. I felt that the Valenti was a little woofy, but later on I dropped out some low end on the bass track and liked it much better.

Well, this time, I've got 8 bars of Active NP5 on the left (Aguilar OBP-3), followed by 8 bars with the preamp bypassed. I believe that the clarity improves when the pickup is passive. This would tend to support what I said about the OBP-3 being "hyped" in the low end. Of course, all it takes is rolling back the bass knob a little, but I don't like turning knobs to get back to square one.

Let's keep in mind, folks, that I'm not even playing the bass through a preamp (I've got a Glockenklang), and we're talking about totally flat settings. Still, when we get things as close to perfect BEFORE all of the processing, it's quieter, punchier, and more organic.

And Carey, if I were to decide that I wanted to to lose a little low end, I'd probably just lower the pickup a hair. I know that you're a perfectionist, and you're making some great products.

Andy

Well, here's the clip...
