Valentines Day date advice

So here's a question about flowers.

The girl I'm taking out is pretty easy going and she's not too into the whole Valentine's Day thing. She's dropped the hint that she doesn't really like receiving flowers and chocolates or going on cliche dinner dates that night just for the sake of it (she'd rather that stuff happen orgaically as a relationship grows). That said, I thought it might be sweet to still buy here a single of her favorite type of flower (mostly because I [key word] think every girl going on a date deserves something along those lines).

My question is do you think this is a cute/nice thing to do that she'd appreciate, or do you think she'd think it was lame since she has already told me she just wants us to keep things simple? I asked her roommate what she thought and she said she didn't think the girl I'm taking out would like it, but I can honestly see it going anyway. Plus I don't think a single is that outrageous or cliche. I like to think it shows I've put some thought into it while keeping things simple and while also being the kind of guy that I really am (and I know she appreciates guys who are real and aren't fake in those regards).

Depends, do you have a white blazer? :hiding:

Oh yeah I know for a fact when girls say they don't care or don't want something they really do and like others said usually it is like a trap. However the girl I am dating is not like that. The only reason we made the plans on Valentines Day is because it is the only day this week she has off work so the fact we are going out on Valentines is more of a coincidence then anything. However I do want to surprise her with a little something to show I do like her.

I have been asking some of my friends and co-workers and have got mixed reviews about the flowers, some did say a nice box of chocolates and perhaps a card too, then some of the girl friends I have said why not some lotion or something from Bath and Body Works or a nice smelling candle? Each had their own opinion which now gives me options, however now I have to pinpoint to getting one or two of the items.

I do like the line AaronMB mentioned "As much as we don't like to support the marketing hype of holidays, I do like you, and it's Valentines Day..." because it is not making a huge deal about the fact the date was on V Day, however it does acknowledge it enough and the fact I like her to get her something. A few flowers and a box of chocolates seems like a good pair. The only thing is I hope the flowers wont freeze or wilt in my truck while we are in the movie. I figured I would give her the gifts after we leave the movie. But what do you guys think?

That box picture is hilarious!

get the roses. these guys saying flowers are lame or not roses probably spend a lot of time sleeping on the couch or single. when all her friends have roses and you got her a grocery store bouquet she's not gonna wanna talk you up to her friends.

the rest of the date is up to you. take whatever you do and make it interesting. I've brought flasks to the movies on more than one occasion. with the right girl that can make for a crazy fun night.

you can probably get a nice little necklace at a place like target for $20

I'm making my fiance some cheddar bay biscuits like you get at red lobster. she loves them but i hate red lobster so i learned to make them. for V-Day i'm gonna cut them into heart shapes before baking.

Some women enjoy flowers OTHER THAN roses. For example, my wife's favorite flower is Gerber Daisies. They are approximately $3/flower at the local florist. For $20, they will wrap 6 of them in a decent looking bouquet, which lasts about a week. It pretty much works every time.

Grocery store flowers can be awesome - it depends on the grocery store. The local Food Lion? probably not. Whole Foods? Absolutely.

I'd stay away from cheap Target jewelry until you understand her tastes a little more. You should be able to discern this easily. If you cannot, ask the women you work with. What type of jewelry does she wear now? Is it something she will wear for many years, or something she will give to the local Goodwill in a year? Will it give you pleasure to see her wear it?

^ This!

Gerber daisies are a good bet as are Lilies - Oriental hybrids usually have a really good fragrance.

Ditto on the jewelry - if you go too much and get Tiffany or some other expensive bauble it looks like you've tried too hard - too cheap and you look desperate.

Unless she is adamant about hating flowers, V-Day, etc. a small gesture to show that you are thinking of her will go a long way and show you really do care.

Warning: I have no experience so everything past this point has the potential to be complete and utter ********.

-Flowers are lame... unless she really likes flowers. If you know her well enough to pick out something personalized, go for it. A bottle of wine? A bracelet? A nice scarf (scarfs are frikken awesome and cheap). I think anything that can be used in some capacity is good.

-Warm Bodies is great choice. Really good, fun and interesting movie. The romance plot is weak sauce but everything else is really great

That's about it for I think.

Listen to Kwesi! His advice is "complete and utter ********"! :p

Women like flowers, and Warm Bodies is a stupid movie :spit:

:hiding:

Though, flowers get crazy expensive on this "no-liday" so be choosey. And see whatever movie the two of you like :smug: Warm Bodies just looks terrible, to me.

The ladyfriend and I tend to avoid going out on Valentines day itself, can usually enjoy a quieter meal out the day after :)

"Its my **** in a box!"

My gf explicitly stated she didnt want me to do anything for V-day, and Im happy not to.
She did really mean that, yes? I might still get her some flowers, at least.

+1 Its Valentines Day, and a 3rd date. Get Roses. Grocery Store bouquets are for unexpected flower purchases, or to make an apology.

So true!

Not necessarily. Some women are really...not into flowers. I've met at least one.

Even women who arent into flowers appreciate receiving them.
As they say, "its the thought that counts".
Its not like she's going to be mad if she does get them. Id say indifferent at worst.

well aware of this. my ex wife loved loved daisies. until her friends had roses then it was the equivalent of It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown: "I got a rock"

cliche's are tried and true for a reason

Good responses. I honestly think that a nice box of chocolates, roses (perhaps a half dozen) and saying something clever like how "the date fell on Valentines Day but did not want to make it a huge deal but still wanted to show you I like you" would do the trick. Or get a box of chocolates, a single rose and a card. But to me saying something clever would make up for a card. The chocolates are pretty casual and the roses are pretty formal and she can show off. Buying her clothing items may be a hit or miss just like if I would buy her a music CD or lotion or a candle. Under it all I want her to get the impression I really like her and I am interested without physically coming out in a cannon burst and saying it if that makes sense.

As much as I would like to get her a lot of the bigger gifts I still have to realize this is only the third date, sure it can be called the make it or break it date, but I figured just something casual would be good and not seem like I am indeed trying to hard.

A couple of other thoughts on flowers.

What the heck do you do with a bouquet while you are in the movie?
If you take them in the house, before you go out, they are out of site and mind.
Is she allergic/hay fever?

The scarf is a really good idea.
First, they look sexy as all get out.

She can/should/will put it on and wear it out on the date, giving herself little reminders that you made a very nice effort, and put some thought in it.
It's inexpensive, but not cheapskate. They are different.

It's not too much for a 3rd date.
Jewellry is waaay to far out there.

Chocolates, can be an explosive item.

Try to figure out what colours will go with her hair, jewellry, that sort of thing.
It's pretty unrealistic to find one to go with the outfit she'd going to wear tomorrow.
But if one of the get up's she trotted one out on your previous dates give's you an impression that it's a favourite of hers, or you really liked it, you can buy one to go with that and make a comment to the effect of, "I saw this and thought it would also look great with what you had on (insert identifier for the date in question here)"

That way if you miss the mark on colour and pattern with what goes on tomorrow, you've given you both a bit of a face saving way out. Kind of takes that extra bit of pressure off.

Good luck

That's the route I'm taking. I decided that I'm going to buy her a few black eyed susans (her favorite flower) and surprise her with them. She can't be too upset about that, especially if I say something along the lines of what you're saying. Plus I figure since all her roommates have boyfriends and will more than likely be receiving things, she'd feel special getting something, too (especially since they are her favorite flowers and she [hopefully] won't be expecting them). I think it'll be nothing but gravy for me :)

I mentioned I would probably give her the gifts after the movie when we head back to the cars for that exact reason that she does not have to awkwardly carry them and mess with them through the movie.

I was not planning on getting her a huge box of Russell Stovers, however perhaps just a littler variety box. That along with a single rose and a card may be just perfect. I do like the scarf idea and her wearing it however it could also be a hit or miss if it does not match or some women don't like men buying them clothing items. Plus it would probably be presented in a bag like a present...a little over the top for the third date?

I don't know if she has ha fever ha ha...typically that is a rare question that I would ask on dates, now if in a relationship of course.
