I see a lot of talk, but no bass

I am really considering the Fusion 5 in white. Love it love it love it! The price is just right!

i probably would have bit had white been available. but it aint so im waiting on reviews..my impulse buy windo has closed but one good review could certainly put me back on a waiting list

Ok, so I just checked shipping to 64119 for a super b 5, and it was over $65 dollars. I'm not trying to be chincy, but seriously, $65 for just a bass?

FWIW, If you break it down... that's really not out of line.

The box alone is about $10.
If it's packed well (no case for these things - so they have to be extra careful), you've probably got another $10 in packing material. So the FedEx/UPS/etc shipping cost is right about $45. IME, That's about right for a 30-40 lb ground shipment.
(In this case, the size of the box will cause it to rate at a higher weight.)

I'm temped by the Fusion 5 Sunburst...

I like the GFJ in sunburst. But I need to know the price and then the shipping to know if it'll be in my budget or not.

I'm hoping it'll work out but you never know.

In this case they are not shipping by actual weight, it is because of the size. A 4ft long box takes up way more room than the average package meaning it is taking up the room normally occupied by smaller packages. Whichever packages now do not make it on that truck or plane must be placed on ANOTHER truck or plane, which uses that much more expensive fuel. They just categorize it as 40lbs because its a standard measurement, box size isn't.

Anything in a box as long as a bass is considered an oversize package, which means you're generally charged for something that weighs about 30 lbs regardless of actual weight. Its because it takes up a lot of space in a truck and is awkward to handle, so they make you pay for it. Given, I agree $65 is too much for shipping of a bass considering most people ship them for more like $25 to $30 everyday, and when you factor in the discount most businesses receive from their shipping providers, it seems a bit excessive.

No, It's not. But I just find making money on shipping to be in poor taste. I'll probably still buy one when the money is free, but $65.25 shipping when I just got a quote from ups with a self packed 47x24x6" and 30 lb (being generous) box from his zip code to mine for $35 is pretty irritating. Especially when I'm stretching (monetarily) to buy a product that I've been impressed with the customer service before the sale. *edit* also just checked, and it's $53 for a regular guitar, which is smaller and isn't an over sized item. And for our west cost friends, $80 - $85. I just checked from Rondomusic.com, and shipping for a 5 string bass from NH to Kansas City (roughly 100 miles less than from here to miami) is $17.50 for a 5 string bass.

I guess i'm the type of person that gets irritated with things on principal, more than just the numbers. I've been impressed overall with the fact that the owner of a company is on talkbass giving out info on his products to possible customers, taking a proactive approach, as apposed to just fielding emails. I would rather pay $30 more for the bass and get charged fairly for shipping, honestly.

These things had my interest as a beater 5 till I noticed the 18mm string spacing spec. What does it take to get someone to make a 34" scale 5'er with a FULL 19mm spacing? Aargh.

Yes it does. I guess I am picky. Hell, the 18.5mm spacing on Fender 5'ers bugs me. Not right away, but within a few minutes I notice it dragging on me. Enough of a distraction that I am thinking more about my hands than the lines I am playing. Doesn't hack it for improv stuff. I have the same issues with 35" scale length. Oh well. Back to search mode. For me this isn't a MINUTE detail, but I guess others may see me wanting an instrument whose ergonomics fit me as a sniveling little detail. God bless there judgmental little hearts. :scowl:

my comment wasn't meant to single you out, sorry if it sounded that way. but the last few pages of this thread somehow segued into an awful lot of people talking about how they totally would buy one IF ONLY _____ (fill in the blank). i understand people's desire to communicate their individual needs to the folks that run these companies, but all the fun got sucked out of this thread a few pages back and I understand why a lot of companies wouldn't want to step into a firing range as intense and yes, nitpicky, as a talkbass thread. no offense intended to any individuals here.

No harm no foul. I probably jumped the gun and was overly touchy there. I've been dogpiled on for not liking spacing tighter than 19mm before, so I most likely over-reacted. My bad.

There are some things that I just don't understand as deal breakers. String spacing, bass weight (especially if it's < 9 lbs) and to a lesser extent neck dive have ever been issues for me. I also know that , for me, It probably is because of my lack of skill. I don't know enough to be picky.

However, Lots of people probably don't understand my gripes with shipping.

I count myself lucky that those things don't bother me. I would probably be irritated if I found something I like, but wouldn't play it for string spacing or weight or slight neck dive.

I am excited about these new basses. No one is really coming out with this type of stuff and I'm happy that someone is finally putting something new out on the market besides fender copies. The mm/p is IMO, an awesome combo, and the Super B5 looks to be a beast all it's own.
