Do the Garbos or Animas have any problem with slapping. I don't do a lot of it, but if those strings don't handle slaps well I'll probably want to avoid them.

Might wanna try the Garbo Lights if you slap, they were made with slappers in mind. I know of quite a few slappers using those. Alot of folks use gut on top with the Lights on the bottom.
I use Olive E&A ($$$!!
) , Lenzner D&G, but I like a real dark mellow thumpy sound that works well for Country slap bass.

Garbos thump really nicely. On my upright I have Anima E and A, Garbo D and goldentone G (like golden spiral). They sound great on my bass for hard bop, jump blues, old time swing. I had an all Garbo set on my Eminence for a long time which also sounded really good for jump blues. I ended up using a goldentone G on the Eminece as well because it sounded and felt better to me than the Garbo G.
I am just about to experiment with the Velvet 180s on my old english bass after using evah pirazzis for a few months. Could someone with experience of these strings tell me how long I should expect them to settle in.

am interested in finding a good E&A to go with my gut D&G. heard good stuff about garbos (and i liked animas). the garbos are said to have a great sound but are supposed to have a huge diameter. how do the garbo lights compare, sound- and feelwise, with garbo regular?

I use for about 2 years garbo light (tension 23kg per string), first i mix whit D & G Gut and now all Garbo set for better tunning. They sound dark and mix very well whit the other instruments, very old school tone. They are also very good for slap tech.
I use this set for old standarts from 20's - 50's.
On other projects i use spiro weichs and of course it's a completely diferent sounding strings.
Nuno Alexandre from Velvet is the best guy to talk about this strings, don't forget to hear his sound, it's five stars Old School!!!

If i may summarize: Nuno wrote that the regular Garbos have a bit more tension and volume. both go well with gut. the difference in diameter is negligible. Right?

Probably my favorite in the Velvet arsenal. The suites made excellent all-purpose strings. Good bowing, good pizz, good thumb position, good slappers (yes, I do all of these). Long string lenth on my bass made getting the fit right a PITA, but a good string.
Trying the EP weichs now. I wanted a more direct tone up front. Funny, I find velvets to be like Acoustic Image cabs. Fantastic tone, but I don't get the feeling anyone in the audience can clearly hear what I'm playing.

I only tried the D and G regular tension, but didn't dig them much (I know my experience may have been affected by not having the whole set, but still). I tried adjusting my bowing to them, but in orchestra, whenever I had to dig in they seemed to crap out a bit.. tone-wise I found them thin and lacking a little low end/spread/whatever you wanna call it (kind of like the FCS). The same goes for pizz in a jazz/improv/classical setting...
..remember though, this is on my bass and results may vary (as you can kind of see from txstatebass's experience w/ the 180s). FYI, I play a hybrid Benedikt Lang which seems to prefer thicker strings like EPs, or slightly more tension (was using Flexocor Starks for a bit with pretty good results), or warmer sounding like OFCs.

My 180s have arrived but I'm not sure if I should put them on as I've just done some recording today, and my bass with the evah pirazzis sounded pretty good..! It was a session with a string quartet and I was playing 50/50 arco/pizz. I was happy and people complimented my sound but I still have the urge to put these new strings on which may sound better(after 2 weeks settling in) but probably won't. Am I sick!?!
Sick?? Not at all! You're a bassist exploring the myriad sonic possibilities made possible by the string industry! I'd say give it some more time before you try them out.. did you do a search for 180s on the forum? There's a good bit written about them here (some love 'em, some hate 'em). Also, even if you do try them and don't like them, I'm sure you could unload them on here pretty easily.
So I put the velvets on yesterday.. My initial impressions are that they sound great pizz but only so-so for orchestral arco. With the bow they sound quite 'grainy' compared to evah pirazzis - I just wonder if I can live with them until they settle in!
I had been debating between Garbos or Animas for awhile. A couple of days ago I scored a new unopened set of Animas (with the extended E string, which I'm just going to clip). They should arrive in the mail today.
I'm going to put them on my bass and see how they sound. They may be too bright for my Shen, and if they are I'd be up for swapping with you. But give me a week or two to try the Animas.
