Tone matters, but to be honest, I really like the design of this thing. Even if i could clone this "clone", it wouldn't have the same appeal to me. I admit, I like the box it comes in too much to bother. Sometimes packaging/style/design matters too.

As far as the sloppy soldering, there does look to be too much flux and heat used but I treated those photos to enhance the detail.... and so enhanced the flaws as well. Don't be too hard on the guy. :p

I'd be happy with transistor types and the values of those three red capacitors. But I'm just going to experiment with my own values. I always tweak the circuit to my liking instead making exact clones.

No need to completely dismantle it. You should be able to undo the screws holding the board and flip it over for a picture.

I agree about the rest, the picture probably does make it look worse than it is. Anyway, it's a killer looking pedal, borrowing a bit from the Moogerfoogers in style. $150 is rather cheap compared to what other boutique builders are charging for their clones.

Good question!

Well, The knobs vary the sound little (in my setup) as I stated before.
Maybe mines unique (read defective). or my ears are dead.
I just dime them both full-on. There it is... doom-tone.

Also,it lacks a LITTLE gain imo. The sound and tone are HUGE but the volume is honestly NOT.

BUT, that can be compensated for with other pedals and amp settings.
I am turning down the b:assmaster (before it) and turning up the preamp.
Moved to before my EQ pedal as well. That fixed it.
I guess you could say its "placement specific".

Also, do you use batteries or a p.s.?
If you use batteries, changing them won't be a simple flick of the wrist. 8 screws.
BUT having said that, this thing has the BEST battery craddle evar.
Really well designed and unique imo.

Please don't let me talk you out of this if you like the sound. :bassist:

Hmmmmm,

well thank you for the update...I'm still on the fence about it. I don't really use many pedals, but I use a p.s., no EQ pedal or other fuzz, but I'm in need of a good fuzz and it's between the spider, attack goat or battering ram, ..not sure..trying to make an educated decision as much as possible.... :confused:

I thought it had a huge volume boost on tap and was unuseable with the volume knob dimed, but then again you are using a tube amp so all that volume is just creating more distortion. Tommyr01, if you have a clean solid state amp and/or use a tweeter in your cab you may not get on with this pedal. It's definitely one that sounds best going into a dirty tube amp, or even a Sansamp.

That is a very good point, I hadn't considered what amp the sound clips were using

whoa. Not compated to the :assmaster.

fwiw: I wouldn't call the amp I was using in the clip "dirty".
It doesn't have a gain knob and a master volume knob.
Just volume.

I owned a super collider v.1 a while back.
I didn't like it as much as this. But some people luv them so idk.

Ok Faceinbass,

It arrived saturday.....I'm loving the nice Doomy fuzz !!!!!!...I will take it to practice on Thursday and test it in the band setting...very nice so far........here's some pics....Ben added something new..a trim pot inside........

It doesn't seem to lose any low end in my practice setting, it's very tweekable.......I'm happy so far :hyper:

I asked Ben about the trim pot, here was his reply:

"The circuit has a differential amplifier who's output is an octaved version of the input, if the signals are perfectly balanced. If you trim that to where the balance is absolutely perfect, you get the most octave, but some cancellation of the fundamental which sacrafices some low end for the octave effect. I like to trim them a bit off the octave for more bottom.

My official recommendation is to leave the pot as is. That said, if I were you I'd probably want to play around with it to find a spot that suits my ears:). You'll find the effect is pretty subtle. "

Good guy to deal with, good communication...took about 6 weeks.

Update:

I used it at practice and I agree with Dannybouy about the use of solid state with this baby. I felt that I had some low end loss. I don't have any tube amps so all I had to test was two solid state amps at practice. I like the sound of this in my home practice setting and thought it killed, but not so much in my band setting. I could see using this for recording...not sure I'm gonna keep it.......


** EDIT **

Using my built in compression helped a bit as did dialing in the trim pot. The trim pot does some changes in sound...kind of creates some octavey stuff to it..
