Verellen Kalaloch (speaker cable) problem (gets hot !!)

I don't see where the plug type would have anything to do with the cable overheating. The cable gets hot because it's being asked to carry more current than it is capable of. It doesn't matter what kind of plug is introducing the current. In the past I've run plenty of high-powered rigs with quarter-inch plugs with no problems. Everything is Speakon now.
 
1/4" connections can suffer from overheating when the tip contact is poor, resulting in excessive resistance and temperature rise. Sprakons and EP/AP connectors are designed differently for this reason.

I see a Speakon-to-1/4" Fender speaker cable. 14 GA, Neutrik connector on the Speakon end -- I would guess that it should at least be decent, but I haven't used a Fender speaker cable and can't say from experience. Have you looked for any reviews of them online?

Beyond that, if your cab takes Speakon connectors, as long as you are getting your amp checked out (you mentioned, earlier, that you'd be taking it to a tech), I would, assuming that the amp checks out okay otherwise, ask what it would take to switch the amp over to Speakons (and to remove the voltage switch or replace it with something harder to flip accidentally).

My Ampeg 810 cab has a speakon, yes. Well, I plan on using that Fender cable until my Verellen will be checked out by my tech guy. I got a couple of gigs in the coming weeks, so using that Fender cable will just be temporarily I guess. Or I just gonna use my Ampeg SVT VR, which I normally only use for my 'bigger' gigs. :-)
 
Question in regards,to speaker cables. Would the cable ends being loose,cause a distortion to the speaker cabinet? Started getting distortion,and noticed the cable ends needed tightened?
On SpeakOn's, absolutely this is a problem. Don't ever tin the wires with SpeakOn screw type binding connections. You will get cold flow where the screws will never remain tight.

Ok,Thanks,for the reply. My cabinet has SpeakOn's to connect,but I have a 90's Trace Elliot,that don't have the SpeakOn's to connect. I have to use the 1/4" speaker cables,to connect.

On 1/4" plugs, if the center rivet that stakes the tip onto the terminal becomes loose, it will also get hot and/or cause distortions.

Actually the solder is okay. Mostly referring to the sleeve on the connector was loose,and needed tightening?
Not the solder, but the rivet that holds the tip to the insulator and the sleeve terminal. If that's loose, the plug will need to be replaced as it can't be tightened. Common fault.

I appreciate your help,but there is a metal sleeve,that has to be untightened so you can get to soldering. The soldering and everything is intact,I am referring the sleeve,that is over the cable and the soldering,that screws back on to the plug. Sorry for the confusion?
 
I'll assume it's usual rats nest of wire inside verellen amps.

1/4 inch jacks have worked well.

Unfortunately not designed for this power rating.

Poop wiring in amp
Poop output filter
Undersized or incorrect value components for output filters
Class D board trying to push 14+ amps
With connections that barely handle 10
On the board or external connections to the jacks
High distortion circuits with unstable amplifier or not enough bandwidth limiting
Poor / bad connection of jacks or wimpy board inside speaker cabinet

To be clear, I didn't advise anyone re. any particular cable -- merely PMed the OP, awhile back, to ask if his problem was solved. He happened upon my PM recently and was kind enough to reply that it had been, whereupon I suggested that he update this thread.

At any rate, I'm glad that his amp is working and that no circuits, speakers, or bass players were toasted in the process.
